donor sperm IUI, where to start?

Hi everyone,

I know that there have been posts about this before, but my husband and I have just decided to use donor sperm. Last September my husband has been diagnosed with azoospermia. We have decided against testicular biopsy. We both  are ok with a donor sperm. I have no medical issues and ovulate on a regular basis.

My questions:

do you have to take any psychological class if you use a donor sperm for IUI?

Which sperm bank did you choose and why? I like European Sperm Bank

How long did it take you to get pregnant?

Did you use any medication/ trigger shot?

Did you do the IUI at your OBGYN ?

Any advise appreciated :)

Thanks and good luck to all of you.

My questions:

do you have to take any psychological class if you use a donor sperm for IUI? RE suggested it but we saw a therapist post chemo anyway and were discussing it there. Besides we did 4 failed Ivf cycles using DH frozen samples from before cancer treatment prior to moving on so she knew what we could handle.

Which sperm bank did you choose and why? I like European Sperm Bank. We are in MA and found a donor we really liked with New England Cryo but did browse Cali Cryo and one more I can't think of name of.

How long did it take you to get pregnant? I have no fertility issues either and was fortunate to get pg on first attempt. Currently 12w.

Did you use any medication/ trigger shot? No medication I tested for ovulation which took 29 days!! again that was decided based on what we knew so far about me having no issues.

Did you do the IUI at your OBGYN ? We did it at our RE bc we had already been having treatments for a year there.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!!!

I used donor sperm because I am in a same sex marriage, so obviously it's a bit of a different situation.  We did not have to take a class or get any kind of counseling.  We used California Cryobank because they have such a large (and I think the best) donor selection; I have mixed feelings about them.  Customer service was great but I had many vials of sperm that were below guaranteed minimum for motile count (I was compensated for those vials).

I did 9 IUIs (4 with one donor and 5 with another) and none of them worked, despite the fact that all of my testing came out fine and I have no IF diagnosis (I am 34 and have been trying since I was 33).  I did get pregnant on our first IVF cycle, but miscarried around 8w.  4 of my IUIs were completely med-free with a midwife practice; the other 5 I used a trigger shot and an RE, and 1 of those 5 I also used Clomid.  Obviously the IVF involved mucho meds and an RE! :)  I know some lesbians who have used OBs to get pregnant, but it seems like a lot of them do not do IUIs.  It's worth asking if you have an OB you really like, but if you are going to use any fertility meds, I would switch to an RE.

Married my wife 8/2007 *** TTC #1 since 7/2011
4 IUIs w/ midwives = 4 BFNs
5 IUIs w/ an RE = 5 BFNs
IVF October/November 2012
ER 11/1: 22 eggs retrieved, 17 fertilized!
ET 11/6: 1 blast transferred, 5 frozen
BFP 11/15! Beta #1: 104 Beta #2: 613 Beta #3: 3415
Blighted ovum discovered at 7w5d; D&E 12/13
FET 1 cancelled
FET 1.1: ET 4/30: 1 blast transferred
BFP 5/7! Beta #1: 142 Beta #2: 730 Beta #3: 3100
*Everyone welcome*

These are very good questions, since my DH and I are doing DIUI in february thought maybe I could help a little.

My questions:

do you have to take any psychological class if you use a donor sperm for IUI? We don't have to take any classes on it.

Which sperm bank did you choose and why? I like European Sperm Bank My RE gave us her top 3 sperm banks she likes to use, and we are currently looking through donors and comparing the ones we like the most, so far, our top running bank is Midwest Sperm Bank.

How long did it take you to get pregnant? can't answer this one yet

Did you use any medication/ trigger shot? We do not have to use any medication, or a trigger shot, b/c I have no issues.

Did you do the IUI at your OBGYN ? Our RE is doing our IUI.

Thank you all for  the replies. Our next step will be to find the right bank and donor.

I am very happy for all of you who got pregnant with the help of a donor.

I cannot wait to be next :)

Have you heard of the book "helping the stork"?  Someone on here suggested it to me.  It talks a lot about DS and all that goes with it.  I just got my copy yesterday so I have not read it yet, but it was highly recommended.
