Too popular?? One week to go:)

Scheduled C-section next week, so I really need to pick a name. I really love two names...Mila and Penelope...but don't want a very popular name (or one that will be gaining a ton of popularity). Big sister is named Sienna. Any thoughts??

Of the two, I see Penelope on this board a lot less often than Mila.

It's hard to definitively say as it mostly depends upon your area.  Then again, people move in life...

On this board you will likely hear that they are both too popular if you "don't want a very popular name".  Go to the SSA site for names and plug in your state and 2011 to see how many were named Mila & Penelope last year.  Maybe that will give you some indication on their popularity in your area.

I've struggled with loving a popular name as well - Sofia.  In the end I know I have to decide which "love" is stronger - my love for the name or my love for her to have an unpopular name.

Both Mila and Penelope are experiencing giant surges in popularity, so if that is your main concern, they might not be good choices.

Mila was not in the top 1,000 before 2006, but it is currently #174. It had a huge jump from 2010 (#364) to 2011 (#174), so it has upward momentum.

Penelope entered the top 1,000 in 2001 and is currently #169. That means that its rise has been a bit slower, with its 2010-2011 jump much smaller (from #200 to #169). But then there's the Kardashian baby, so Penelope might get a big boost from that.

In short, both of these names are trending strongly upward and look like contenders for the top 100 over the next 3 years. If that bothers you, you should look for alternatives. How about Mira (#787) or Calliope (not ranked)?

It's hard to say-- IRL I don't think that either of those names are super "popular"-- I don't think either name has the same mass appeal as Emma or Olivia, for example.

I do think they are both treading upwards in popularity, but it's hard to say how popular they will become in the following years.

FWIW, I prefer Penelope paired with Sienna.

I have seen both names picking up speed but of the two, Mila seems to be more uncommon.  And prettier :)

Both names are becoming more popular, however, I doubt either of them will become the next Emma or Sophia. I absolutely love Penelope!

I think these are two of those names that are super popular on this and other BN boards, but not actually in real life. I think if I met a Mila or Penelope in my daughter's preschool class, I would still think it was unusual and pretty. My DD's name is similar - I see it here often, but we have yet to meet another one IRL and everyone comments on how pretty and unusual her name is.

I much prefer Mila, FWIW. And I don't think either will be super popular (i.e. top 10).

I see Penelope becoming more popular than Mila - look at Kourtney Kardashian and her son Mason. If being too popular is a concern I would probably stay away from that name.

Not based on popularity I like the name Mila over Penelope.

I think they're both pretty, but you should consider that Penelope might very likely become "Pen" or "Penny" which may or may not be a name you enjoy.
