To the ladies who are feeding their LO's bread...a question

I'm just wondering, seeing as you are feeding bread, if all of you made sure that your LO's were ok with eating eggs first?  I wonder this because I only tried dd on an egg twice and she seemed to react slightly to it with a rash on her cheeks.  I have held off on eggs since.  I don't plan on re-introducing eggs until 1 yr plus.  That being said, considering bread has eggs in it, I am very hesitant to let her try some.  What do you ladies think about this?

Bread was introduced at six months. It is probably my LOs favorite thing. My pedi recommended holding off on eggs, but never mentionedc things made with them. We don't have a history of food allergies though.

I really haven't given allergens much though. We don't have any food allergy issues in our family. So Tiny has had bread, pasta, muffins, bagels, and eggs, even peanut butter.

I haven't given eggs yet (by themselves) but my LO has had bread, hamburger buns, pancakes etc and has been fine.

I also make homemade bread and it doesn't call for eggs. So IDK does store bought bread have egg in it?

My DD had a reaction to eggs (her eye swelled up) but has not had any reaction to anything made with eggs.  We are planning to try eggs again after a year. We also have no history of allergies either.

Our grocery store chain (Publix) has a sign in each bakery stating that their bread is made with eggs and in an environment that may contain tree nuts. So, anyone with a nut allergy that buys store baked bread should assume the same.

My home made bread doesn't and there are none in country hearth 12 grain wheat either.

I would see a pediatric allergist to find out how severe your DD's egg allergy is, before offering her plain eggs again. Facial swelling is an allergic reaction. DD1 is allergic to eggs [and dairy and soy]. She can eat her allergens if they're baked into a food [like bread], but her levels are so high, we have to carry EpiPens in case of accidental exposure to the allergens themselves. She gets hives if dairy or eggs touch her skin, or if someone eats dairy or eggs and touches her.

Thank you so much ladies!  You've all answered my question very well.  It's good to know that any eggs that are cooked in baked goods are less likely to bother someone.  I guess I think more in terms of allergies, because dd is on a dairy free/wheat free formula right now and had that little reaction to the initial egg I gave her.  Hopefully she'll be fine with all foods eventually, but for the present is going to be kept off of wheat/diary/egg until at least 1 yr.  I have a history of allergies to both wheat and dairy and it runs in the family.  But, it'd be nice to be able to give her gluten free bread if and when possible.  I'm looking for options to put give her things like hummus on too...OR gluten free pancakes I guess I could do as well.  She likes, or should I say LOVES rice cakes, but I am worried sometimes right now because they don't dissolve super quickly and she will bite off huge chunks and then gets really mad at me if I take it to break it up smaller.  I did try giving her corn puff chips with hummus and she loved those.  But they're not super healthy and so I didn't want to make a habit of it.

There are plenty of breads without eggs.  Plenty.  In fact, it seems to be that specialty breads have eggs, not Wonder bread types.

Some places that make bagels or pretzels may do an egg wash over the top, giving it that nice, shiny appearance.

DD has an egg allergy and we have only run into bread containing eggs one time and that was at a local Italian restaurant.

Ditto Shotzie.  DD's allergist compared eating baked goods made with eggs to Russian roulette.  You know how when you mix batter that you can't be 100% sure that all ingredients are evenly distributed?  What if you make a pancake that has a high concentration of egg in it and your LO eats and reacts to that one pancake?  If you haven't already, you need to talk to your pedi and possibly get a referral for an allergist.  This is not something to mess around with.  I'm still a bit hyper-vigilant with DD's egg allergy, plus it looks like she now has a peanut allergy on top of that.

Eggs were an early food for my guy.  But I will say that my MIL has a severe egg allergy but can still eat bread and things with some egg in it.  As long as its not Challah or something super eggy it doesn't affect her at all.

A friend of mine has an 11 month old son that is allergic to eggs, but has no reaction with bread. I think sometimes the sensitivity might have to do with the quantity of eggs that they eat too. The amount of egg that the baby would eat in one slice of bread might not be enough to cause a reaction where a whole egg would.

You must not have read the entire thread.  Most breads do not contain eggs.

Once DS turned 6m, everything was fair game except for honey. That's pretty  much the only thing he hasn't had.

I just spoke with my pediatrician about this at my girls' 9 month check up.  She said it's okay to begin giving food made with eggs but not eggs alone.  It should be easier for them to tolerate and less chance for a reaction compared to giving them eggs alone.
