What happens when your water breaks?

I know it's not common but I was just wondering bc I just went potty and had to number2 so I was pushing a little bit, and I felt a small gush. I went to wipe and it was kind of wet with some mucous plug. Maybe it was pee, who knows! lol I sure don't.

So does your mucus plug come out? or what? is it generally clear fluid that doesn't smell?

How would you know if it broke while you were on the potty?

If your water broke, I'm willing to bet you'll know in a few hours :)

I had my water broken for my first child and it felt like uncontrollable peeing for at least a minute if not more - much more than a small gush.

Good Luck!!

My dr. wants me to call him if it breaks so. I'm just a little concerned.

Thanks!

When my water broke it continued to trickle out.  It wasn't like pee where I could stop the flow if I tried.  That was the biggest noticible difference to me.

Mine broke in bed in the early morning hours and I thought maybe I peed myself so I ran for the bathroom and continued to trickle on the floor as I ran.  The mucus plug came out maybe an hour later.

I've been losing my mucus plug since saturday....or at least i've had mucus that looks like my plug since then. & yesterday I had my bloody show.

I've had some pretty severe back pain today so I've been sitting on the edge of my bed bouncing to try to help relieve it a little. Could this help break my water?

Mine was very obvious. I basically heard/felt a distinct pop when I was on the couch, ran to the bathroom, and it came in a giant gush. Everywhere.

The night before I had something similar to what you're describing - I peed, stood  up, and a little extra came out, which didn't seem like pee. My guess is that maybe it was a small tear.

ETA: I did call about what I had felt the night before, OB basically told me to do the pad thing, but I never had any more leaking.

I would suggest putting on a pad so you can better gauge how much water, etc you are leaking. If you soak the pad, call your doctor. It's very normal, at least for me to pee when I go #2 and if you were pushing hard I would think its very possible you just peed.

If your water did break, you will continue to leak and then you'll have a better idea if it broke or not.

I would go ahead and give them a call just to update them on what happened.  In my last pregnancy I lost my mucus plug, but no liquid with it.  Everyone is different though!  Better to be safe than sorry! :)

I don't think bouncing on your bed will break your water, but early labor can feel a whole heck of a lot like back pain.

I would do the pad, if you're still leaking fluid, call your doc.

If your water breaks, you know. lol. For me, I had bent over to pick up my keys off the floor and when I stood back up I felt like I had started to pee myself, so I rant to bathroom, peed, and noticed there was still fluid coming out but it wasn't something I could "clinch" and stop. It just kept coming. And it would kind of "gush" a bit when I would move or push certain ways. Your body continues to make amniotic fluid even after your bag breaks so the leak doesn't really stop. If you are sitting down and try to "clinch" your muscles (like if you go pee and pinch it off) and fluid is still leaking and its clear, chances are your water broke. If your ever worried though, call your dr. or head to L&D and they can test the fluid to be sure.

I'll never forget my friend jumping up and down in her mom's kitchen on her due date saying "come out, come out" and BAM her water broke lol

I woke up for the day and got up to go pee and felt something give.  I walked super fast and as soon as I hit the bathroom a huge rush of fluid came out and I was literally standing in a puddle.  I went ahead and did my morning pee where I then got to see the nastiness that is a mucus plug.  I put a bath towel between my legs like a diaper and ran downstairs for my cell phone and ran back up and stood in the shower while I called husband and dr. and anyone else who would answer their phone! lol  I had soaked the towel just going downstairs and back.  Everytime I would move I'd get another huge gush coming out.  I stood in the shower the entire time I was waiting for H to get home from work to come get me. I had to change jeans twice before leaving for the hospital and wore a bath towel in my pants (yep, pitched that bad boy).  When they asked to check to make sure my water actually broke I told them they could check the 3 chucks pads I soaked, the towel and socks in the trash or my jeans.  I'm hoping if my water breaks this time it will be similar or else I'll have no clue it happened.  Just really don't want it to happen when I'm at work.  Sorry this was so long but my water breaking was the most exciting part of my delivery, my fave story!

It's usually more than a little, and it will keep coming out as you make more. Walk around, change positions and see if it continues. I was literally stuffing hand towels in my pants for hours on end and drenching them after my water broke with DD,

When my water broke it was during my morning pee.  I could have sworn I stopped peeing, but it was still coming out.  It eased up a bit and when I stood up, down my leg it went.....I knew at that point it was my water.  I ended up wearing a hand-towel pad haha to the hospital.  I was a bit embarrassed when I took that thing out of my pants, but I'm sure they've seen worse.  Come to find out, I had what's called a "fore-bag of waters."  Apparently, part of my fluid got sectioned off and actually sealed off from my whole other bag of waters.  I didn't know this was possible.  Had it been my whole water, I imagine it would have been much, much more water!  Since I was scheduled for an induction anyways that night (41 weeks 3 days), they went ahead and broke the rest of my water.  At that point I went into labor on my own.  It was pretty crazy!   After the initial breaking, it just continue to seep out every time that I moved, walked, shifted, etc. but I hear that just a trickle for a long time is possible too.

my water broke in a GUSH, every time i moved, laughed or coughed or had a contraction a bunch gushed out. it was pretty obvious for me. in a few hours if youre still leaking i would call. my clinic said if you lay down for 15 min then stand up and feel leaking still then call.

good luck

If it broke it will more than likely keep gushing.  When mine broke it was very obvious because I had a big, movie-style gush.  Then when I was waddling around with a towel between my legs it kept gushing out with every step.  If you suspect it's you water just lay down for a few minutes and then stand up again and see if you feel anymore OR you can try coughing and see if anything leaks out.

I was induced and mine broke after an internal exam by the L&D nurse; I was moving around to get comfortable again and all the sudden it just went everywhere. I thought I peed myself and I was so embarrassed and was trying to get up so I could change the sheets and the nurse was laughing so hard at me. Shortly after I got my epidural and when I went from sitting upright to laying back down, it gushed again and I was extremely apologetic.... the nurse thought I was crazy. It was WAY different than a pee feeling, and maybe that's because it was something I couldn't control, but there was a lot more of it.

It was a HUGE.GUSH.  Granted, I was sleeping and woke up in the middle of the gush, but it was pretty unmistakable.  The gush woke up DH as well, and he is nearly impossible to wake.

It wasn't like that. Maybe it was just a gush of pee haha. When I lean forward that sometimes happens.

Also I didn't put a panty liner/pad on. I did shower after incase it was my water and I go into labor. But my undies haven't been wet, so I assume that's a good thing?

Or would it eventually stop leaking? It only happened 6 hours ago.

I go for a NST on friday anyway, so the fluid level will be checked there.

I highly doubt that you really think it was your water, otherwise you wouldn't wait DAYS before getting it checked out.

It was probably just pee, like you said.

My water broke in bed. I had no contractions before but started contracting within 10 - 15 minutes of it breaking. So I'll agree with PP's who said you'll know.

When my water broke I was in bed at home and I felt it and water gushed out. I ran to the bathroom and it was a continous gush for a good amount of time. Then it slowed to a trickle. There was no mistaken it was my water. I had not lost my MP at all before and no contractions until about 2 hours after my water breaking.

Now my best friend had her water slowly leak out over a few hours until she realized it was probably her water.

Your bag of waters can tear and then the baby can position over it and it will stop leaking. Put on a pad lay down on your side for awhile and then when you get up see if your pad is wet. Good luck.
