Low lying placenta

Has anyone heard of any tips or tricks to move a placenta away from the cervix. I was hoping for a med free birth and the dr says if the placenta does move I will need a c section.

You have plenty of time... the uterus will double in size before you deliver. Chances are that you will not have any issues... the overwhelming majority of low lying placentas resolve on their own. I also have a low lying placenta... my husband is a Dr and told me it's not a big deal at all, and that it's not an issue until you're close to delivery. I don't think there is anything you can do to force it to go one way or the other... and if there was it probably wouldn't be a good idea. I'd just let your body do what it does... if you need a C-Section it's because it's the best thing for you and your baby.

Thanks TradeMama, everything I have read on Google made it sound hopeless so that makes me feel better. I appreciate that.

Mine is low as well.  The dr told me that there is plenty of time for it to move up as the uterus grows.  I was upset at first but then figured I have 18ish weeks for it to move up and that's most likely what will happen.  Good luck!

LOL no, you cannot move your own placenta. 99% of the time, the placenta does move out of the way. I would not worry about it.

I have the same thing. 90 percent of the time when they are found in the first trimester, they move up and out of the way. FX ours all move up!

I heard the same thing in my ultrasound - and I was kind of upset at first. However, I have been told by my doctor that as the baby grows it can pull everything up. I also have a friend who is a doula and she mentioned that it would be helpful if I went for a prenatal massage. Make sure to tell them that the placenta is low... they should be able to do some things to relax the ligaments to encourage the baby and placenta to move into more favorable positions.

Good Luck!

There is nothing you can do to *make* it move. It just happens with growth as your placenta is just moving with your uterine wall. That being said, I had a complete placenta previa at 17wks which totally moved out of the way by 20wks. Low lying just means it is close (within 2cm of your cervix) and most OBs/MW will let you attempt a vaginal delivery if you are not bleeding too much during labor. Low lying is the same as marginal in technical terms. You're early enough that it should move away more before delivery.

My placenta was found to be low lying at 21 weeks as well.  My dr was quite positive that it would move out of the way by the time i deliver as the vast majority do.  He also said that even if it didn't he would let me labour first and see how it goes before he even thought about a c-section.  i'll have it checked again at 30 weeks.  Until then he said no sex as it could cause a bleed.
