not crawling or pulling up :(

My dd is 9 months 2 weeks. She isn't crawling or pulling up to stand on her own. She gets on all 4"s and sways back and fourth said she's ready but won't go further. If I hold her and give her something to hold on to she'll pull up but never on her own. Pedi says its not good if she doesn't by 10 months. She just wants to sit or lay and sit up from laying position. I'm jut upset and don't know what to feel... Is something wrong? Do any of you have a similar experience? Would love to hear your stories/thoughts.

Don't be upset. My LO just recently started crawling in the last 2 weeks and he will be 10 months tomorrow. I would take what the pedi says with a grain of salt because I don't feel that it means something is wrong with your child. They do things in their own time. Sitting up from laying is a good thing so see, she's making progress!

My DS didn't crawl until he was 11 months. He didn't pull up until well after that. He walked at 16 months. He's now a happy, healthy 3 year old. DD is entirely different and crawled at 6 months. Every baby is different. She'll get it soon!

This. DS just started pulling up and crawling all within 2 weeks of each other...however, he can't get to sitting position from tummy...go figure! all babies learn within their own time. DS sees a PT due to tort, she said crawling can happen up to a year. all kids are different. your pediatrician shouldn't scare you like that.

DS just started crawling two weeks ago and didn't start pulling up until like three days ago. Like your LO he would pull up in our hands or if something was put right in front of him. After he started crawling it just clicked. It sounds like your LO will be crawling soon if they are getting up on all fours. Plus, crawling is not even a milestone. Some babies never crawl. If the pedi is making a big deal about no crawling by ten months I would question it.

Same as above.  She was just scooting and not pulling up at all at 9 months.  Within 2 wks she crawled on all 4s and pulls up on everything.

My LO just turned 9 months. He was doing the all fours and swaying thing for a few weeks. Then it just clicked for him to move. He just started making major developments in mobility about 1 week ago. He started crawling last week and this week he started pulling up and cruising. When it did happen, it happened so fast. Relax and enjoy the immobile stage. It is exhausting chasing him all day lol. Plus try introducing some new toys to help with moving around. I let him play in an open space where he is free to move and crawl around (of course under supervision). I also enticed him with the remote control and my cell phone since he loves those and I won't let him play with them. Also for Christmas he got this little truck that he loves pushing around. That's what started him cruising instantly. It will happen...in his time.

This. Crawling isn't something your pedi should be worrying you about.

DS is 9 months and 1 week. He doesn't crawl or pull up. He doesn't even get onto all 4's yet. His pedi wasn't worried at all. It will happen when he's ready. And I think I heard that most pedi's don't consider crawling a milestone anymore.

DS did the all 4's rocking back and forth right before he crawled. I got down on my hands and knees to teach him how to do it (even helping by gently moving his hands and knees forward).

Some kids never crawl though and go straight to walking.

You could try some classes (not for the sake of learning to crawl before she is ready, but just for fun). I have not personally gone to any of them, but in my area there are little baby gyms that have some fun classes (the Little Gym). I don't think they necessarily teach them to crawl or walk but it would be a fun way to move around and help her learn more about moving around.

FWIW, my niece didn't crawl until maybe a year or after, and walked at about 18 months. She does ballet now and is really good at it - at age 4 :)

My DD doesn't crawl or pull up either, and she's 10.5 months.  She rolls, scoots, reaches, gets in sitting position, but doesn't crawl.  My Pedi said as long as she's mobile in some sort of way, she's fine.  Don't worry.

That's further along than my 10 month old.  She will army crawl a couple of feet to get to an interesting light up/musical toy, but that's about it.  No sitting herself up (she sits fine if you sit her up), no pulling up, no traditional crawling.  The army crawling is really a new development in the past week and a half or so.  The pediatrician said at her 9 month appointment that if she isn't pulling up and cruising at 12 months they'll refer her for a PT evaluation just to rule out any issues.

I was the same way as my DD.  I only army crawled until the day I turned a year.  I pulled up before I really crawled.  I crawled at 12 months exactly.  I was cruising shortly after.  I didn't walk until 15 months.  I turned out OK.

Does your LO have another skill area that LO is interested in?  DD is a very fine motor skills oriented kid.  She loves doing anything with her hands - stacking rings on and off the peg, stacking cups stacked on top of each other, building block towers, flicking light switches, etc.

I can't believe your pedi. said it wasn't good for LO to not be crawling by 10 months. There are plenty of kids who are just fine who don't crawl at 8 or 9 months. I can't remember when DD1 started crawling, but I know it was delayed because she had torticollis, and her left side was weaker so it actually hurt her to crawl, which deterred her until her muscles got strong enough. She walked unassisted before her first birthday. If LO is swaying back and forth on all fours, she is probably pretty close to crawling.

Dont get discouraged mama! She's almost there!

DS was a "late" crawler. Late in quotations because really, it's in the realm of normal, just not as early as we all wanted. Like if the range is 6-9 months, don't we all want them hitting those milestones the day they're 6 months?

Give her lots of encouragement. She could learn to crawl, pull up, and cruise all in a month. Really!

DS has really only gotten good at crawling on all 4s (he did tummy/army crawl for a while) for like a month or two. It's really not been long. Then he figured out how to stand on his own, and now he's attempting to walk. It all happened like bam, bam, bam, one after another!

If she doesn't hit the milestones when your pedi wants her to, it's not bad to see if there are some ways to help her along. Not sure if it applies, but my son has had alot of food milestone issues, and it seems that a couple ear infections really had an impact on his eating. Is she good and healthy? Think about when you have a sinus infection and you bend over... ouch! I wouldn't want to crawl when feeling like that.

Otherwise, be patient, help her practice, encourage her, and she'll do things when she's ready :)

Yes, Yes, and yes..take what pedi says with a grain of salt.  My dd only went up on all fours at the beginning of Dec and it took her a whole month, but she did start to crawl forwards on Jan 1st (9 months 1 week).  If your LO is up on all fours, it's just a matter of time.  I was told at the 8 week appnt that my dd was behind with her gross motor skills (public health assessment) and in a matter of 1.5 months she quickly learned/done a bunch of things and is now caught up.  They all will do it at their own time, when they're ready.  Once my dd got up on all 4's, she crawled backwards for a few weeks, before even heading fwd's.  Oh yah, and my dd will be 10 months in 10 days and is not able to pull to stand on her own, and I wouldn't dare let go for her to stand by herself if she's holding on to a coffee table.  She'd fall over so quickly.  She does pull up to her knees to check things out, but that's about it.  It'll come:)

Oh yah, and I just want to add most important!!!!!!!  Have your camera ready and charged.  Because when it happens, it happens fast.  AND they only have the wobbly movements for like a day or two tops and then they look more like pros.  Trust me, it's worth it to get the wobbly movements on camera if possible.  It's so cute to watch afterwards and to be able to compare and see the progression.  It's taken my dd 10 days to even be adventurous enough to crawl out the living room and down the apartment hallway for the first time last night.  She was quite proud of herself when she crawled over there to discover things she hadn't touched before.  That sense of wonderment to that degree won't happen again.

My pedi was more worried about her not being able to pull up by 10 months. It's so nice to hear all the encouragement thank you! I just got nervous bc pedi seemed to make a big deal about pulling up!

My daughter was not crawling, not even getting up on all fours and rocking like yours, up until the day she tured 10 months. And then she just decided she had the knack and boom, full on crawling. No army crawling, no crawling backwards, no rocking. She went from basically only either sitting or sitting and reeeeeeeaching and then sitting slightly further away to full on high speed expert crawling.

She also is mostly not pulling herself to standing. She pulls herself to kneeling, but only on two occasions has she pulled herself to standing. She can't seem to do it when she's thinking about it, both times she did it, she was trying desperately to get to one of our cats and not paying attention to what she was doing. And both times, the moment she realized she was standing, she plopped back down.

So, I wouldn't be too worried. My doctor told me not to be, because Rowan was meeting/exceeding milestones in other areas. The doctor advised that she was just concentrating on communication and fine motor skills and would  catch up with gross motor skills later and that that was completely normal.

I am giving your Pedi the side eye.  My DS never crawled.  I guess he eventually pulled himself up but I don't remember when.  He walked before he turned one.  He is now 4.5yr and perfectly normal.

My 9 mo. DD has rolled over probably less than 20 times.  Doesn't crawl and is no where near pulling up.   I am not concerned.
