Using first letter of deceased family member's name

My family has a tradition of naming the girls in our family using the first letter of a deceased family member's name. Example, Lisa is named after Aunt Louise.  The boys in the family seem to just take on the same full name of a deceased family member. Cousin Samuel is named after Grandpa Samuel.

Has anyone else heard of this? Is it just a jewish thing?

I want to name my child after my grandmother Rhoda who recently passed. I was thinking Rebecca. If it's a boy though, would it be wrong to break tradition and name the boy Ryan or another R name in honor of grandma Rhoda? Is it weird to name a boy after a woman? Thoughts?

I don't think it would be weird at all. And I like Ryan.

I've heard of this. According to my Jewish friends they used the first letter of an important family member but the boy/girl thing wasn't an issue. My friend just named her son a J name after her deceased mother. So I don't think it would be weird to use the R for a boy.

I don't think that would be weird, I think it's a nice gesture.  Also, Ryan is a nice name!

I think it'd be great to honor your grandma by naming your son Ryan.

This.

Rebecca (and it's traditional Hebrew version, Rivka) are two of my favorites (and we're not Jewish), but they don't go with our LN so we'd never use them.

I don't think it's weird at all - I love family names!

And I'm sure if you check way back in the family tree, there is probably a Ryan floating around somewhere to appease any who might be a little more strict with the rule ;-).

I'm not Jewish, but our friends named their son Harry after g-ma Harriet who recently passed and his MN is Avidan after g-ma Adelaide who had passed. I don't think it is weird to honor the opposite sex or to break tradition and not use the exact same name.

Well the names of my cousin's and I flow from the Jewish side of the family, but four of us five are named using that method:

Max & Max (Yes, our great-grandfathers on moms' side had the same name): Merryll, Marni, Michael, Marissa

Seymour: Shannon

I don't know what my aunt did for middle names, but it's nice especially if you're not a fan of the name, but still want to honor the person. I know my mom hated Maxine for a girl, hence Marissa.
