Trying to bust out...

My 5 week old is up all might grunting moving around trying to bust out of his swaddle. He's mostly unsuccessful at getting the all the way out, but he still will try for hours?? What's the alternative here?? Unswaddle him and let him hit himself in the face all night?? Is there any way to Unswaddle and still get sleep?? Or do I have to go to a high tech method like a miracle blanket??

TIA!!!

Not sure why you think you HAVE to swaddle, but you don't HAVE to. It is helpful, yes, but DS doesn't like it 1/2 of the time, so we don't always use it.

You can always try a swaddleme or something similar (didn't specify if you were using just a blanket or what ;) ) and see if that helps.

I find that the miracle blanket is easier when I'm sleep deprived. The stretch helps. Then again the down up down up swaddle never works for us. We like a big Aden and Anais swaddle blanket which also has stretch and putting both arms in first. As in down both arms tucked, up put a little twist in at feet before bringing tail
Up, up/across long tail really helps to wrap tight.

Hope that isn't too confusing. Our little girl is really strong! But she won't go down without a swaddle. And I have to wake her for feedings still so ive had way too much practice lately. Lol.

I ont think we HAVE to swaddle, but everytime ive tried leaving his arms out, his arms go nuts and he's unable to sleep. So how does that work better than the constants grunting trying to bust out?? Seems like either way I'd be up all night listening to him fuss...

You could try a sleep sack as well. It is just a flannel vest/sack that keeps arms free but still helps them stay warm. My 3 week old is crazy strong and gets her arms out of the swaddled every time.

DS didn't start sleeping until we gave up on the swaddle.  He hated it with a passion.  Some babies just don't like it.  Let him go without for a few days and see what happens.

ETA:  The first day or two without it, he did wake up a bit smacking himself but he settled into it fine by the 4th or 5th day.

Have you tried 1 arm out of the swaddle? Maybe he won't struggle to get out so bad if he has 1 arm out, and wont beat himself up too much with just 1 arm free. Good luck

I know every baby is different...  our LO got swaddled maybe a handful of times when he was first born.  He broke out of every swaddle we had except for the Miracle Blanket.  That one actually worked.  But after a few times, we just realized he wanted his arms free.  So we basically just swaddled his lower half and kept his arms free.  He didn't seem to mind at all and slept well even if he hit himself in the face.  We did have him sleeping in the Rock n' Play for the first 8-10 weeks.  He loved being cozy in that.  So maybe try and unswaddle him.  See what happens.  I don't think swaddling is for every baby.

I agree with this I would try the one arm swaddle. See if that quiets his struggles a bit.

My 4 week old does the grunting and carrying on. We unswaddle him during the day and swaddle him at night and let him do what he can to bust out. The struggle tires him out and he almost STTN (6 hours). We left him unswaddled a few nights ago and he was up every 2-3 hours.

My DD hates her swaddle but really can't sleep without it, she struggles much less now that we use the escape proof swaddle-you can look it up on youtube.  It involves a receiving blanket and a swaddleme.  She really can't get her arms out of this one, so it's cut down on the grunting and struggling.  I realized I wasn't swaddling her tight enough on my own.
