BH: What's the rule here? 4+ in an hour to call?

I'm going to call the OB once I get out of class anyway, but remind me of the general rule.... if you have 4 BH in an hour, are you supposed to call? (Provided that you've tried resting, drinking water, putting your feet up, etc)

I know I am probably going to look like a freaking idiot, but TIA.

My doc says if I have four in a hour to give them a ring. He said to call if they are getting closer together and of they were getting stronger or painful. He did also say to try and rest, drink plenty of water and get off my feet when they start to see of they will stop on their own.

It's annoying because I have literally been sitting in class for an hour and a half, with my feet resting on the chair in front of me. I'm equipped with plenty of water (that I've been consistently drinking all morning) and I haven't moved from this spot, yet the BH started at 10 a.m. and been about every 10 minutes from there on out. I HATE BH!

The tightening is making me feel nauseated, but they don't hurt. It's really annoying!

My doc said that same rule, but I'm not following it.  Real contractions are super painful, anything before that doesn't mean much so I don't know what they'd even tell me if I called.  I plan to labor as long as I can at home, even if it were the real thing.

My OB would just tell me to drink more water. My doctors were never worried about BH.

I don't recall my OB giving me a "rule" regarding BH's but I called last week on mine because around 9:00 at night one started and didn't stop.  For an hour.  It wasn't painful but it was obvious and I was like, Uh, you should be done now.  So at an hour, after reading my "What to Expect" and noting that it should be fixed if I change position (if active, rest; if resting, walk around) and that didn't help, I called my OB.  She said it may be dehydration so had me drink 2 glasses of water and a tylenol and lay down.  She said if they still didn't subside go to L&D, but they eventually (after probably a total of 2 1/2 hours of a solid BH) relaxed.

Nothing like that since then, just a regular BH here or there.  Not painful and not regular.

When I had DD#1 the contractions definitely felt stronger & more like they meant business, but I just hope my body remembers the difference so I don't end up in L&D too soon on a false alarm.

I wouldn't call unless I was pre-term.  Tough call since you're 36 weeks tomorrow and that's the point at which they won't stop labor.  My midwife would probably tell me to take a nice bath and have a glass of wine.

If I had that many BH now, I'd just be hoping they progressed to real contractions.

When I asked my OB about contractions she mentioned every 4-5 minutes or water breaking as far as coming in, but that was more in regards to once I was full term. If they become more frequent or intense I would give them a call, especially since you're only at 35 weeks and considered pre-term. Don't feel silly, I call all the time but be prepared for them to tell you to come in and spend a good amount of time in L&D as a precautionary measure. I called last week about some leg pain around my varicose veins and the nurse had me drive all the way in (45 minutes) to be seen by the nurse, then sent me to have a doppler/ultrasound of my veins to make sure I didn't have any blood clots forming. When I made a face at the mention of the additional testing the LPN told me "If it was bad enough for you to call and come in, then we are going to check you to rule everything out." So, it took four hours out of my day...

Don't let that keep you from calling, just know that the doctors tend to err on the side of caution and if you call concerned they will more than likely tell you to get checked out and it's not a quick process.

Good luck and let us know how everything turns out!!

Mine says 6 per hour.

I've noticed that I get them a lot when I've been sitting for long periods of time (like at work) or when I have a full bladder. Getting up and walking around or peeing usually makes them go away.

BH contractions are not labor contractions so no need to call.  At least that's my understanding.

I would not call unless they started getting closer together and started getting harder. Those last few weeks for me last time around I had a ton of BH - just my body gearing up for birth I guess...and I still went a week over.

However, if you are nervous about it - definitely call.

That's kind of where I am right now.

I did call, and I told them that when they happen, I feel nauseated and dizzy but they aren't painful, just very uncomfortable and don't last longer than a minute anyway. I told them that I was at rest when they began, it's about every 10 minutes, etc, etc but that, again, they are not painful so I'm not lead to believe that these are anything more than BH.

They told me to go into L&D to be monitored. No thanks. I can do without the bill for that service for something that means absolutely nothing. I expected them to tell me that, but thought I'd call anyway.

Coincidentally, my mom had called me right after I spoke with them and I told her. She's all, "SO WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A BABY TODAY?!" Ummm... nope. Then she said, "YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO WHAT THE DOCTOR SAYS! GO TO L&D!" Okie doke, Mom.

Fluck you, BH. Be real or be gone!

Mine told me to only call if I have more than 4 per hour for 2 consecutive hours (so, 8+ in 2 hours).

If you've had almost zero BH before, but suddenly you are having 4-5 an hour for half a day, that's a big enough change to merit a call.

Otherwise, what you're describing is normal. I have a decent amount of BH every day, which sometimes come "regularly" (4-5 an hour) and sometimes come when I change my activity level (resting to moving or vice versa). Even a whole bunch of semi-regular, painless contractions aren't a cause for concern by themselves according to my OB.

I went into L & D for some very very minor bleeding and it turned out I was having contractions every 2-4 minutes and was 3cm dilated. I wasn't even feeling them. If I was, I would have chalked it up to BH, since it's just tightening, no pain. I am so grateful I went in. They put me on magnesium to stop contractions and gave me steroid shots for the baby's lungs.

Because of that, I would recommend going in, even if it seems silly, unless you are already at full term (and you are close).

Eeeek! That is the stuff that scares me. Like I've said in past posts in TB, I have never had a "natural" contraction. I didn't even have a single BH with DS. Even though I'm a STM, the whole BH/contractions/labor watch is new to me. I have heard stories of women being in active labor that had some uncomfortable feelings but nothing painful, then BAM! Baby.

I'm almost full term so it doesn't scare me as much as it did before, but still. I'm glad that in your case, everything worked out. Looks like you're almost to full term also!

Mine says to call when I have 6 in an hour, but they didn't send me right to L&D, they told me to lay down for another hour, time them still, drink more water, and call back if they are still at 6 an hour because then they'll have me come in.

I've been having regular BH since about 32w and I've avoided any trips to L&D (knock on wood..)

I had 7 in 50 min and called the nurse today at lunch. I have a UTI and those cause contractions. It was definitely worth getting checked out an monitored.
As for the bill, if you have insurance and no crazy high deductible, aren't you going to meet the max this year anyway?

The ER copay is $100 alone, but I honestly didn't even think about meeting the max OOP this year after the L&D. ::face palm::

I need to review my insurance again too, because I'm not sure if L&D would work the same as ER if I were to go in.
