birthing classes, aka Lamaze...

Ok ladies, those of you who have taken these classes: worth it or a waste of time & money?? Would it be better just to buy a book and learn the basics on my own?

If you're planning to get an epidural, it's a waste of time.

So it depends.

It was a waste of time for me, but things happened so fast I didn't get to utilize any of the techniques. Maybe I would have had a different opinion if I had a different labor?

I loved mine, with my first. I had a natural birth. Mine was covered by my insurance, it also had a breast feeding class on another night.

I'm planning on taking another one. But its also covered by my insurance.

I plan on taking the class at our hospital, but I'm a worrier and a planner, so I'd like to know as much as possible before going into it! I like it that our hospital offers the class, so I think they might be able to offer advice or answer questions on any specific questions I'd have about how they do things there. I've also had friends that took them in the past, and they met a lot of moms and dads in their area, and now get together for playgroups and such. So I think that's a nice aspect of it too. I don't really know anyone from our town, and it's never a bad thing to have more mom friends to talk to.

I am taking pregnancy classes now and will start parenting and birth classes soon.  I found a few programs in my area that are not only free, but you get benefits from them.  I just had a pregnancy class today and earned 11 credits in a program called "Learn While You Earn" that allows me to buy things for the baby in their boutique.  And to give you an example of how awesome it is, after just two classes I have 36 credits and an Ergo Baby carrier is 30.  :)  So, I'm finding them not only informative but very useful and not a waste of money.

The childbirth classes are beneficial, I believe, even if you are planning to get any epi. Epis don't always work, or maybe take only on one side or stop working after a while.  So it's good to have some resources at your disposal just in case that happens.  It's rare but I've known a few women who claim that their epis wouldn't work on their left sides which means they were numb on the right and felt everything on the left and had to utilize other techniques to work through contractions.

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

Just a note on the bolded: many hospitals (at least near me), will do a maternity ward tour and they go through a lot of this information. My hospitals tour was very thorough. That was the best part of my birth class, and then I found out that's the tour they give for free to whoever! :o)

We took Bradley classes. Our hospital didn't offer them so I searched and found a local class. I found the classes very informative, and learned a lot about breathing techniques and birthing positions. Bradley classes are 12 weeks, vs Lamaze's 6 week course. The reason for this is that they instruct that labor is similar to an athletic event, like a marathon. You need as much training as you can to get ready. They focus on kegels and other exercise to get ready, as well as touch on nutrition. The breathing technique they teach is also different from Lamaze.

If you are trying to stay "natural" and avoid an epidural, I would definitely recommend it. Even if you want an epidural anyway, taking the class helped me take the fear off of going into labor at home and knowing what to expect and what to do before it was time to go to the hospital.
