Fears

As this pregnancy is progressing I'm realizing I'm developing and thinking about ALL of my fears in terms of what can go wrong while I'm carrying or during delivery.  One thing all of you ladies who have given birth already can help me with is understanding how to push.  I have a cousin who was very young when she gave birth and didn't know how to push correctly. She pushed so wrong and so hard that her intestine came out of her rectum. AHHHHH!  Please any advice to ensure that this doesn't happen to me would be deeply appreciated.

Are you planning to deliver in a hospital?  If so, the nurses and doctors will guide you as to what to do...as least they did for me with my first.  The best way i can describe it is to push like you are going to the bathroom....so you are pushing in your bottom.  That is what i was told, that is what i did and my daughter came out without any issues.  :)

I had both my children unmedicated so pushing came natural. The doctors did not have to tell me when to push because my body did it on it's own. I'm not sure how the epideral would affect the pushing. I do know the doctors have to tell you when to push as they monitor your contractions.

I've never heard of this happening (intestine coming out of rectum). I don't think that's something that would normally happen.

The doctors and nurses will help you when it's time to push.

Hey depending on your labor you may not even have to really "push" yourself.  Your body will do it naturally (or at least give you the urge and you'll just go along with it).  I've never given birth before, but have attended several and this is usually the case when an epi isn't involved.  When there's an epi involved the doctors and nurses will guide you and they know how to do it.

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

I've never heard of this either - I would think it was more likely that a hemorrhoid came out because of all the pushing (external hemorrhoids can look a lot like what I imagine an intestine would look like).

I was un medicated as well, and my body just had the urge to push, and I just put all my effort into what my body was already doing.  When dealing with fears you need to remember something important....women have been having babies for millions of years and it is the most natural thing in the world.  I think your cousin was likely a very very rare occurance or had something else going on, because I have never heard of anything like that happening.  Don't worry and just enjoy the experience.  :0)

I had an epi but it was completely gone by the time I got to pushing.  This was my experience as well. You'll push because you won't be able to to NOT push.  And the medical personnel will monitor it and give suggestions if needed.

Thank you everyone.  My biggest fears are that I simply won't know what to do.  I would hate for my ignorance to cause me to hurt my baby or myself.  My cousin was unmedicated and I think she was very scared and in a lot of pain she didn't truly realize she was going to have.  Again she was very young.  What's weird is I had heard of this happening before and thought like you guys, no way very strange etc.  and sure enough it happened to her and now it's in my head that this could and probably will happen to me. lol.  Just nervous.  But thank you I do need to calm down and trust the professionals there to help me.

When the nurse says "push like you are having a bowel movement" do just that. You'd think that you'd want to push through your vagina, but seriously, push through your bottom. I pushed for three hours because I couldn't figure out exactly how to push. They kept saying "push through your bottom" but I coudln't figure it out.
