It's ok. I had a false alarm last Sunday too. Mine was really terrible contractions (4 minutes apart, mostly in my back) that were painful enough to keep me awake and writhe around in pain, plus lots of discharge as well. My OB told me to go in, and I did, but was only 1cm and 50% effaced.
It is really discouraging, but if your doctor thinks enough of it to tell you to head in, don't come down on yourself. :) We're FTM's, we don't know what to expect yet. These last couple weeks are the worst, right?
