When to move up in flow rate?

My little girl just turned 3 months Tuesday so I was wondering when do you move up to the medium flow nipple. I know the label say 3+ months but when to you KNOW. Do you move up just because shes 3 months? Will it be harmful for to keep using the slow? Does it honestly matter? She perfectly content with the slow so I'm wondering to I need to go buy a whole new set of nipples?!

I asked my pedi this because DD would suck so hard that the nipple would collapse and she would just be sucking air, and that was at 2 months old. The pedi said that there really isn't a hard and fast rule for when to switch to a higher flow, but if she is sucking so hard at it that it would be time to either move up or switch to a firmer nipple, we did both, and haven't had the problem since, DD is much easier to feed now.

I asked the pedi when DS turned 3 months and he said really there is no need to move up unless the child is having trouble drinking. We ended up moving him to level 2 because I added cereal for reflux and in level 1 it wouldn't drip out. Around 5-6 months he went up to level 3 because I noticed again he was having to suck to hard and getting frustrated ( he wanted more faster). He drank one unil 14 months and never went beyond the level 3.

i just bought them anyway because i knew i'd use them - but you could just try the faster flow and if she gags or 'chokes' on the milk then she's not ready. 

i tried that with DS and was very surprised how well he did and he drank it much faster with no problems!

if i accidentally gave him the slower one he'd get upset!

Great question!! I was wondering the same thing. I started using bottles with 2 holes at about 2 months old, worked fine. She is now 10 weeks and I tried a fast flow nipple and she chokes and spits....hmm..I guess that can wait till later!!

Honestly with my first we never moved up from the lowest flow. He never had any issues. Never saw a need to move up. But if they seem frustrated when eating, then it can't hurt to try to move up.

My DS used slow flow until maybe 6-8 months when it was taking him forever to take a bottle of Ebm and dcp was getting frustrated. We switched to medium flow and he was a happy camper. It didn't effect his bf habits either at that point.

I've never actually switched up the nipples with either of my kids.  They still use flow 1 nipples at a year + when I'm taking them off bottles.  DS is currently 10 1/2 months and still uses flow 1 nips.  I personally think it's just another way to get money out of mamas.  My boobs nip holes don't ever get bigger or smaller again for the next kid.
