Molar Pregnancy Question

Hello all!

I have been a member of the Knot, the Nest, and the Bumb since 2009 before my husband and I got married. We began actively ttc since March, 2011. I'm VERY irregular. Like, maybe two or three periods a year. So of course I could not conceive on my own. January 4, 2012, I went to an OB/Gyn, and he prescribed me Provera to jumpstart my period, which I never got. Then he prescribed me another batch. Still no period. Then I took a pregnancy test and got a BFP on February 15th. I went to the OB, and they did an U/S and it looked like a molar pregnancy. We did a lot of blood work checking HCG levels and all. Long story short, I went in on March 15th and saw no more heartbeat. :( Had a D&C performed on March 16th. It was confirmed by the biopsy that it was indeed a molar pregnancy, but it was partial, which is why there was a heart beat to begin with... They told me not to ttc for a year. Is there really that big of a risk in ttc again? Is there anyone else out there that has experienced this?

You should probably post this on TTCAL; I think there will be more people there in your shoes.

Beyond that, yes there are very serious reasons why you need to wait the time your OB told you after a molar pregnancy. I am very sorry for your loss and good luck in the future.

Hello! My sister had a molar PG a few years ago. She'd been TTC for 4 years and finally got a BFP only to find out it was molar and then miscarried. Her OBGYN put her on BCP for 6 months and told her if she got PG during that time he'd recommend terminating due to the possibility of trophoblastic disease and cancer. Her 6 months of BCP was up in July of 2010 and she got PG again at the end of Sept 2010. According to WebMD you will need to use BCP for 6-12 months following a molar PG, so I'd suggest asking your Dr why they are suggesting the whole 12 months or get a 2nd opinion. Good luck!

I've had a partial molar pregnancy. I highly recommend checking out this board on babycenter...it really helped me a lot after I was diagnosed:

Since you had a partial molar pregnancy, you typically wouldn't need to wait the full year before TTC again. Many people get a "sentence" as little as 3 months of negative beta tests. I had 4 months before being cleared to TTC. It really depends on your doctor, type of MP, and how quickly your hcg levels resolve, and whether they resolve on their own or not.

The reason for the wait is to be 100% sure that any resurgence in HCG is truly due to a new pregnancy and not from turning into trophoblastic disease. If they're uncertain, they'd wouldn't be able to determine if they should treat you for trophoblastic disease (i.e., chemotherapy) or leave you alone because you're PG.

Good luck. Definitely check out that site!
