how to get a good score on BPP

Hi Ladies,

How is everyone doing? Has anyone ever done a bio-physical profile(BPP)?  Does anyone know how good that test is?

I am in my 38th week and my ob-gyn would like me do one. I take medication for hyper-thyroidism and due to that ob-gyn wants me to do a bio-physical profile. He says if my score is not good, I might have to be induced on my due date. I don’t want to be induced as that would most certainly lead a c-section.

This doctor had initially agreed to wait till 41.5 weeks.  But due to thyroid medication, I think he wants to avoid liability and get me induced asap. If my scores don’t come out good, then he will start putting a lot of pressure on me for induction.

Does anyone know how to get a good score on BPP? Should I eat or drink something special?

If anyone has ever done a BPP, could you please share your experience with me?

Thanks

Regards

You shouldn't be aiming to get a good score, they need to see your true score.

Your doctor probably has valid concerns beyond just liability if he is asking you to do this. I would listen to him and take the test and accept the results you get.

You can't do anything to get a good score.  It is more about the baby getting a good score.  They have to move around, take some breaths or practice breaths, you have to have a certain amount of amniotic fluid...stuff like that that you have no control over.  They do it for the best interest of the baby and if your OB says it is go time, he/she is saying that because there is good reason.  Good luck!

This.

I know how it feels to be pressured for induction and/or c-section, and it's not pleasant, but I'd still rather know the real result of the test instead of trying to find a magical way to pass it, skewing the results.

I'm sure it is part liability, but also part of giving you the best care he can for you and baby, given your condition.

Well, this isn't really a recommendation to "get a good score" so much as advice for anyone, pregnant or not. Make sure you're hydrated.

ITA with pp.

And as an added thought: While inductions do increase your risk for a c-section, it doesn't guarantee you'll have one. In fact, the majority of inductions end with a successful vaginal birth.

Indeed.

I was terrified of induction, but I was induced with DS, technically, after my water broke and I had a successful vaginal delivery.

All of my close friends that have had to be induced have also had successful vaginal deliveries. I actually only know of one person that has had a c-section out of my friends, and it was necessary; her daughter was very sick and in the NICU for several days.

I don't remember exactly everything that is measured with a BPP, but I don't think there is any way to "cheat" it. I would not want to cheat it anyways, since it gives your provider a good sense of your baby's well-being.

Things they look for are movement, tone, and if the baby is practicing breathing. They also measure your amniotic fluid levels I believe. They are scored out of 8 or 10 (if they do an NST they add 2 points for a good NST).

There isn't any way to really cheat on an BPP. It is simply an u/s. You want the baby to pass, yes, but it is better to know what is really happening in there vs. getting a good score. A BPP measures fluids, practice breaths, the blood flow in and out of the cord, and movements. All of my BPP's were on a scale of an 8. If you didnt' get all 8 points you then would have to go do a NST. I never "failed" any of my BPP's but I was glad to be armed with the information of how my DD was doing at that moment. GL! The end is in sight.

IMO, the bpp is a load of shiit.... the results are completely up to the "grader's" discretion..... I went in and scored a 2 out of 8, perfect NST, and was told that I needed an emergency induction.... then at the hospital I was transferred to I received an 8 out of 8 and another perfect NST and they told me to go home...

anywho, one of the things that's graded for sure is fetal movement so if anything make sure you're hydrated and maybe drink a little something sugary....
