Post-pregnancy clothes

I'm a FTM and unclear what size I should expect I'll be post-pregnancy (relative to my pre-pregnancy size, I mean). In general, I wear a lot of dresses and pullover tops/sweater so I need to get some things that will be more nursing-friendly. But I'm not sure how to know what size to get. Is there a way I can tell what size I'll need to buy so I have stuff that fits me to wear after the baby arrives? Or did you just wear your maternity clothes still for a while?

I wore the earlier pregnancy pants - like the demi panel - for a while. In general my old shirts were fine on me, and I just wore nursing bras or tanks underneath. I never bought "nursing shirts."

Specialty nursing tops are kind of a waste. I would spend money on some good nursing tanks and wear those under normal tops for nursing. As far as dresses go a dress with a faux wrap or crossover neckline would work for nursing because you could just pull it aside. As far as pants go I know I stayed in my maternity pants for at least a few weeks after giving birth because they were the easiest and most comfortable. Plus, your body is going to change a lot in the first couple of months after giving birth that guessing a size is kind of a crapshoot. I wouldn't spend much money on post partum clothes until things start to settle down.

It's really hard to say what size you'll go back to and how quickly. One of my friends went back to her size 0 clothes 2 weeks after giving birth. For others, it can take a while longer.

I agree with PP - I wouldn't get nursing-specific tops. I lived in nursing tanks. That way, my stomach was still covered and I just pulled up my regular shirt to nurse.

I didn't want to wear maternity clothes right away because I already felt gross enough. I just felt like the maternity clothes maximized my leftover flab.

DS was born in May, so I didn't have any maternity shorts or anything. I bought just 1 new pair of shorts that were bigger than my pre-pregnancy size, and then paired that with different tunic tops to kind of hide the leftover muffin top.

When I was sitting around the house, I was always in sweats that were comfortable, and I was fine with that, but I know a lot of women don't like to lounge in sweats all the time.

At my 6 week appt. I am usually wearing clothes 1 or 2 sizes up from prepregnancy.  Even if you lose the weight by then, the shape of everything is a little different for a while.

Within 2 weeks of having DS, I was back in pre-preg clothes.  I only gained 14 lbs though because of horrible m/s, so that helped.  I did, however, gain while breastfeeding (many people will tell you the weight will just fall off from the bf'ing but it definately doesn't work that way for everyone!).

It's hard to say exactly, but I'll give you my sizes so you can maybe compare.  I was a size four & 133lbs before I got pregnant, gained 28lbs and came out of the hospital with a 7lb 11oz baby in a size 12 & 148lbs.  Within 3 weeks I was down to an 8, and at 6 months I was back in my fours & 135lbs.  I was so tired of maternity clothes & didn't want people to assume that I was still pregnant since I was still in the wardrobe.  I wore yoga pants & handed down jeans, flowy shirts and elastic-waisted skirts that I already had in my closet for the first few months and did invest in 3 nursing tops that I loved while trying to figure out nursing with DS1.  I also found some great stretchy dresses on clearance for $5 that weren't made for nursing, but they had a crossover neckline perfect for it & a high waist to accommodate my belly while it was still shrinking back.  Hope that helps!

I wore maternity pants for a few weeks, as they were best for my c/s incision. I fit back into my smallest pants 4/5 months post-preg. My boobs were huge from nursing, so I had to upsize my tops for several months.

I agree with PPs that nursing tops are generally unnecessary, however, if you plan to BF and be out and about, having one or two in your wardrobe is really nice.  I bought two, mostly for Church.  I tried to keep my DD on a schedule where I wouldn't have to nurse her at Church, but there were days when she just wouldn't wait.  We didn't have a cry room or anything, so I had to sit in the entryway of the church, covered with a blanket.  Having the added coverage of the nursing shirt was really great.

Around the house, though, I just wore my regular tops.

I gained a lot of weight (55-60 lbs) the first two times. With DD1 I went from a size 6 to a size 12. With DD2 I went from an 8 to a 14. :-( I wore sweats and t-shirts for a while after they were born and then went out and bought a few items just because I felt better that way. I also needed clothes for when I returned to work at 3 months pp, and I was no where close to my pre-pg size by then.

I actually just bought some more yoga pants that fit me now, that I plan to wear after DD3 is born. I figure I'll be able to get away with yoga pants and t-shirts for a while. I also have 4 of these skirts from Old Navy. For tops I just wear a nursing tank with a t-shirt over it.

I did end up buying a nice pair of jeans in a size up from my pre pregnancy size (even though I technically weighed less after delivery than my prepregnancy weight). I thought they would be nice to have this time around too but now that I've lost weight between pregnancies I'm thinking they will be too big. I just went between those jeans and my maternity pants until the other ones fit.

I  went out and purchased some of those fold down yoga pants and nursing tanks... that's what I wore last time too except for the fact that they were shorts since DS was born in June... they were stretchy so I just went with the size that currently fit my hips... my hips didn't seem to shrink very much PP just my belly... nursing tanks I bought one size bigger to give room for breast expansion
