1st birthday cake

Are you making it or buying it? What flavor cake and icing? My first thought was chocolate but my LO hasn't even had chocolate yet! It's one of the " no no" foods in the first year so it seems strange to introduce it to him in the form of a giant cake to smash into on his birthday, no? But chocolate is the best!

For little man i am making his smash cake. haven't really thought about it but probably a white or yellow cake with just a little buttercream frosting. I'm hoping most will get on him instead of in him, ha.

And then i was thinking about making strawberry cake cupcakes but wondering if that would look weird at a boys party. It is the cake that my mom always makes for my and my brothers birthday. But she didn't when he was little. It is only his first one. not the one he is getting and it is only going to be family and neighbors.

We bought a sheet cake for DD's birthday and just cut a giant piece off for her to smash.  I wouldn't be too concerned with introducing chocolate because chances are LO isn't going to eat much if any of the cake.  DD had a lick or two of frosting, a couple of nibbles of the cake and just had fun destroying it and wiping frosting on everything.  I got a white cake with whipped buttercream frosting, but that's because I knew everyone else would eat that kind.

I'm doing two cakes.

One for the joint family part we're doing the weekend before for both our girls. One on the actual day of her birthday (DD1 is also getting her own cake)

DD1 has taken over decorating choices and is insisting on flowers and butterflies, so I've been practicing my piping technique.

Doing lemon layer cake for the party, and maybe a ginger and almond cake for her actual birthday. She'll only get a small taste of each one, so I'm not too bothered about what is right for her, and doing something to please the adults/older kids.

I'm having a real cake for the adults. And I'm making a cake for my LO using one of these recipes.

I did the same thing- had a professional do the adult cake and I made the carrot cake off of that website for DS.  We tried to give him some and he was having none of it!  He ended up getting some of the "adult" chocolate cake because I wanted to get some pics of him actually eating cake!  We ended up throwing the carrot cake out (the one I made came out really big- probably enough for 20 people!) because nobody wanted to eat it.

I hadn't heard of chocolate not being ok??  Our pedi said honey was the only food off limits, this is interesting!

I prefer white smash cakes because I feel like chocolate looks gross all over baby's face. haha  My daughter has also had bites of my fudge bar so I'm not too worried about it if we wanted to do chocolate.

I'm having my aunt make DD's cake and the week after her birthday I'm having smash cake pictures taken too. For my older DD we did vanilla and vanilla icing but with food coloring and she did fine.
