Fever question

When do you panic?  My 10 month old is running between 100.5 and 101 fever.  I just noticed it because she felt warm but has been acting totally normal all day!  Playing, talking, laughing, etc.  She is drooling a ton again and might be getting ready to sprout some new teeth.

She's never run a fever before so I don't really know when I should call the dr or when I'm being a typical FTM freaking out.

I just gave her tylenol and will check the temp again in about an hour.  How often can I give her Tylenol?

 Thanks for your input!

A fever is 100.4 or higher. Even a 101 degree fever isn't too bad. Our pedi says if LO is acting fine, to let them be. If they're miserable, then give Tylenol or ibuprofen. Follow the instructions on the package, as far as how often you can give them a dose. And make sure you don't go over the recommended number of doses in 24 hrs.

Make sure LO is getting plenty of fluids. I wouldn't call the dr unless LO has other symptoms, or the fever doesn't go down with meds, or it lasts 3 days or more. Fever is a natural immune response. It just means the body is doing what it should. It could even be from teething.

By 9 months it's already gone up to 104-105 to worry unless the fever spike has been sudden or there are other things going on like no wet diapers in 6-8 hours or other symptoms that are worrisome like a sudden rash or non-responsive behaviors.

If the fever persists you can go back and forth with ibuprofen and acetaminophen every 3 hours.  Otherwise you can give either ibuprofen every 6 hours or acetaminophen every 4 hours.

You've got several degrees to go before panic needs to set in :)  100.4 is a pretty typical "get sent home from daycare" temp but often, even that doesn't need to be medicated - it's a personal preference.  I medicate at 101.  A temp that doesn't come down with meds is a concern.  Our pedi likes to hear from us if LO runs a 103 for more than a couple days.  FYI Motrin is a better fever reducer and for a stubborn fever, alternating Motrin and Tylenol allows you to medicate more often because they're different medications.
