PSA: insurance company may cover your breast pump

After reading a few comments about insurance companies offering some coverage for breast pumps, I called mine and it is 100% covered.  I have to order through one of their vendors.  I spoke with a friend who works with me and it is the same breast pump that we both wanted.

Its completely worth a phone call.

I spent about an hour today on the insurance website and in my own benefits and was unable to locate any information that would have lead me to know about this benefit. Clearly it is a very hidden gem.

The annoying part is they clearly know that I am pregnant and could have volunteered the information.  I almost bought one today but while reading the reviews, someone posted to call the insurance company first.

Quick question: When you called, what department did you ask to talk to? I'll be the idiot waiting on hold for 30 minutes and then when they finally say, "Can I help you?" I'll respond with "Uh, um... breast pump-- is it covered?" :)

You just call and say you have questions about your coverage...you might want to gather any other questions you had also bc it gets a little tedious being on hold multiple time. They then will look it up and tell you whether its covered but you should mention that you read about the new health care reform act passed Jan 2013 that insurance companies are covering the pumps now. They will then give you a list of medical supplies that they go through. You probably can only order through them.I ordered mine about three days ago online through Edgepark.com .... Some are saying you might need a prescription or order from doctor for the medical grade ones but I ordered a Ameda purely yours. My insurance company allows me to rent or buy.But why rent when I can keep it?

It is a great tip I learned on the Bump last go 'round!  Mine would only cover if medically necessary, so I waited to see. LO was a terrible nurser with a bad latch, so the nurse talked to my doc and got the prescription for me. They handed it to me in the hospital, and the lactation consultant gave me a full tutorial. It was great!

FYI to any military moms reading this - Tricare won't cover it unless there is a medical reason (baby is NICU, etc). They are not affected by the health care changes. I used to have a link to the page that talked about it, but Tricare removed that page from their website.

You can still look up "breast pump" on the Tricare website, and it will give you the info about under what circumstances they will cover it.

My company (pomco) is grandfathered in and does not cover pumps.

Ditto this. It's a bummer. I checked into it when I was pregnant with DS, and once again with this one, just in case it had changed.

If your insurance does not cover the breast pump, remember that you can claim the cost of the breast pump (and accessories) under your medical expenses on your taxes, also.

The problem is that insurance may cover one but when you call the durable medical company you may find out it is only a single pump and there is no way to upgrade to a double.  It's pretty close to worthless in my book if you are a working mom who relies on pumping to feed your child.  With DS it took me 20-30 minutes using a double so there is no way a single will work.  I will get the single and keep my fingers crossed that the double I used with DS will hold up to get me through another year.  I hate insurance loopholes.

Only if your total medical costs exceed 7.5% of your AGI. And I think in 2013 it is changing to 10% of your AGI.

You can use your FSA to purchase a pump and supplies though.
