My DDs name is Gemma, and my best friend just had a girl named Georgia! I love them both.
I love the meaning behind Gemma (little jewel) versus Georgia (feminine form of George, meaning farmer or tiller of the soil). However, I will warn you that people mispronounce Gemma all the time (they use a hard G).
I can envision dancing to Ray Charles' Georgia at a wedding. It is a classic name. However, I feel Gemma has a spunk about it and yet feels somehow cosmopolitan. (Although I've heard people say it is stripperish, so to each their own).
I have not had a good reception to my daughter's name. I get two questions:
1. How do you spell that?
2. Is that a family name?
I feel number 2 is a polite way of saying,"I don't care for that." Maybe I'm too sensitive.
I don't think you can go wrong here just thought I'd give my perspective.
What about Virginia? "Ginny" is darling.
