popularity speculation

My husband and I are trying to figure out a name compromise, since none of our picks are the same, and I do like a couple of his choices but worry about the popularity.

How popular do you think the following names will become before they start decreasing in popularity?

Juliet - has increased in national ranking from about 360 in 2000 to 172 in 2011.  In my state, it's not yet top 100 but had over 90 occurrences in each of the past few years after only 30-60 occurrences per year in the earlier 2000s, 20-30 per year in the 1990s, and under 10 per year in the 1980s.

Genevieve - ranked nationally in the 400s in the 1980s and 1990s, then has increased from 435 in 2000 to 241 in 2011.  In my state, it had 33 occurrences in 2011 after 20-30 a year in the earlier 2000s, 15-20 a year in the 1990s, and 10-20 a year in the 1980s.

Obviously, this is merely speculation and there's no way to know for sure, but I am very paranoid about picking a name (for a girl, anyway) that ends up being tied to this decade, or that ends up being a top 5 or 10 name within several years after her birth.

I don't think either is destined for top 10, but both definitely have top-100 potential. I'm not sure what data you're looking at, though. The SSA website lists Juliet at #252 (with some spelling variations pushing it higher in reality) and Genevieve at #232.

Overall, I think that Juliet has the greater potential for rising high. It is more familiar to English-speaking Americans and has crossover appeal for Spanish-speaking Americans who have embraced names like Julianna. Genevieve is hard to spell and does not have a language-based constituency for growth because the number of French-speaking Americans is not increasing. It might still be considered chic for a while, but I think Juliet has more compelling fundamentals for high popularity.

Thanks - great points about the Spanish vs. French link.  I know Julie was pretty popular back in the day, and more recently Julia has been, so I wonder if Juliet will be next - or maybe Julianna.

I used namenerds to get the national popularity rankings - they group names by spelling and rank them that way as opposed to each spelling being a separate ranking, so I feel like it's more reliable.

Oh, Name Nerds is back! Great. I love that site and it was down for a while. You're right — aggregating the spellings is totally the way to go, especially for a name like Juliet that has some widely used variants.

I am, however, pretty horrified by the aggregated spellings of Genevieve.

Yup, I noticed it was gone for a bit, too - right when I was wanting to figure out all our top choices' rankings!  I was relieved to see it back as well.

And... agreed on all the crazy spellings, for many of the names.  It's hard to believe even one couple would pick some of those bizarre spellings, much less 5 or more!

If they aren't in the Top 100 now, that was the important thing for me. Regardless of how popular a name becomes after you choose it - if it's still rare at this moment, there aren't going to be any others in her age group with the same name.

Our name is growing in popularity by about 100 every year (currently in the 300s), but we're beating the rush, so as long as she doesn't have 8 other people with the same name in her class (I speak from experience), you're doing good.

Both names are very classy and traditional, really great choices in my humble opinion. I wouldn't worry about their popularity and I certainly would have whacky spellings for what is essentially the same name.

I don't think you need to worry about Genevieve going viral. It's a long name to spell and many parents will resist it for that alone as to not burden the child when young.

Juliet could become more common, especially since there are similar names that could be reduced to Jules or Julie on the playground. Julia, Julianna, JulieAnn, etc.

My son's name trended from about 425 to about 80. I wasn't thrilled by this because one of the only reasons I agreed to it was to avoid him being Andrew S. Vanity on my part I guess. Even with a name in the top 100 for boys, DS has only ever been one of two in school. There was a boy with his name a year ahead in preschool and then in high school (same kid- out of 2300 students). When he attended private school there was a boy from the UK with the same name.

I don't see either one breaking into the top 100 or becoming time stamped to a certain decade. People avoid Genevieve bc of the longer spelling and I think Juliet is too strongly associated with Romeo and Juliet for it to become widely used.

I agree with all of the above.  I think Juliet will gain in popularity, but I don't see it ever getting above 50.  Both Juliet and Juliana were on our list for DD2, but unfortunately DH didn't like them as well as I did.

I agree with pps.

Plus since they are both names that have been around for a long time, they won't be stuck in one era.  I currently know a Genevieve that is 7, and another that is in her 30s.  I don't know any Juliettes, but I do know Julies and Julias that are everywhere from 6 to 60.

Both are great, timeless names and I don't foresee either becoming too popular.

Thanks for your thoughts, everyone.

On a related note, I've read about some nicknames for Genevieve and I'm wondering about the pronunciation for one of them. How would you say Vivi? VeeVee or VihVee?

I would say Veevee since that is the sound in the name. dd2 is Genevieve we call her Gee or GG. I wanted Evie but it never really stuck.

My first though tis Vih vee, probably because I know a Vivian we call that. Obviously the sound in Genevieve is different, but seeing the nn stand alone, I would say Vih vee.

Genevieve has really popped up around me. My niece was named Genevieve last year and a week later one of those large stork signs popped up in the neighborhood to announce another Genevieve. Now, that's completely anecdotal evidence but I could see Genevieve picking up steam. I don't think it will hit top 20 or anything but it could rise.

I can't speculate, but I can tell you that our leading name right now is Genevieve (Eve).  Also on the list is Juliette.   I hope neither name becomes too popular!
