Unique 1st birthday ideas?

Do you have family over, play with the 1 year old, then have cake and open gifts? I'm not really sure how to "entertain" the adults at the party.  Obviously LO will be fairly entertaining, but do you have something for the adults to do? Do they just socialize? Obvious FTM here...

Uhh... I just plan on having everyone over, opening gifts, cake. Everyone that comes will be here to celebrate LO's big day, so I'm not worried they will be bored.

We're going to have a little homemade photobooth. People can take pictures with the birthday girl, and it's a low-key, optional event without too much structure. Easy for kids and adults. I'll email the photos to everyone afterwards an they'll have a little keepsake.

I went to a 1st birthday party a few months ago and they just had food, cake, and presents and it was boring. Most of the time we were just sitting there making awkward conversation. I'm sure the no activity route works for some, but it can also fall flat.

We just did food, cake, presents and had a great time, but our party was also family only so everyone knew each other and they took turns playing with DD & my 19mo niece.

The photobooth sounds like such a cute idea! Would you care to share how your making it? This is something I'd love to do

We live 9 hours way from family so we're going to be having our friends and their kids over for dinner and cake.  I'm not worried about entertaining them, we're all friends and will just sit around and chat while the kids play.  I am also planning to have a photobooth setup and if the weather is nice, the older kiddos can play on the playset in the backyard.

For our photobooth, one of my best friends is a photographer so she is bringing a backdrop stand and solid seamless paper to set up.  We'll have a small table set up with fun props (you can find lots of free, printable photobooth props with a google search and then glue them to a long wooden dowel) and then we're going to have my old camera set up on a tripod with the remote clicker hooked up so people can snap their pics when they're ready.

The adults will entertain themselves.  At any other party the adults usually drink and socialize so I would think they would do the same at a first birthday party.

I was going to say the same thing. Provide some booze and the adults will be just fine!!

I like this idea...may have to borrow it! Otherwise, I believe LO will be some decent entertainment...we are also keeping the invite list small!

If you have food I'm sure they socialize with each other. No need to entertain them.

The only "entertainment" I provided at my oldest son's first birthday party was a slideshow of pictures of his first year that I made on iMovie and set to music (Brad Paisley's Anything Like Me).  We burnt it to a DVD and played it on our tv for guests to watch.  It turned out awesome and of course it made my mom cry.

I'm having my youngest son's party elsewhere where there is not access to a tv or projector to play from a laptop, so I think we will be going low-tech this time and just making a book of pictures that people can look at if they want or making a big number "1" with printed photos on a piece of foamcore to hang on the wall to look at.  Besides that and food, just socializing, watching him smear cake and minding their own kids.
