RP: siblings

Wondering what you all with siblings to the new baby are doing (if anything) for the new siblings-to-be?  (Card, small gift, recognition or any kind...?)

I have a 5 year old daughter and 2 older stepsons (17 and 20); I am especially mindful of the 5 year old.  She is SO excited and the baby sister is gift enough, but I'd like to do SOMETHING special to commemorate.

We got our first who is almost two some the same equipment we will be using for baby.  She got a high chair and a carrier etc.  She's getting into play "house" and baby dolls.  We gave her a few for christmas but kept one back for when LO actually arrives.  My hope is she will continue to be intrigued by imaginary play and can "play along" with me while I'm taking care of baby.

I racked my brain trying to think of the same thing and thats what I came up with.  Mine is just too small to appreciate (or not break) jewelry or things of that nature.  I've heard some folks buy a cute bracelet or necklace for the older sibling. I guess we could still do that but put it away, but I don't think with her age it would have the impact since it would be something she couldn't actually have right then or play with.

DD is 6 and I'm thinking of taking her to Build-a-Bear to let her make a big sister bear for herself, and one for her baby brother.  Yesterday I took her for a special mani/pedi to celebrate too...the original plan was to take a siblings class at our hospital, but they canceled as suddenly no kids are allowed at the hospital because of flu concerns.

My son is VERY into Matchbox & Hot Wheels cars, so we will probably just get him a pack of cars and wrap it up from his little sister.    Money is tight here so I don't want to spend a ton.  I know DS will love the cars and it won't cost a lot!

A few people gave us t-shirts for him that say "Big Brother" on them, and we also got onesies that say "Little Sister."  So I definitely want to take a picture of them together wearing their outfits and I will frame that to put in his room.  (I think I may appreciate that more than he will, but it's still cute.... and cheap! :)

I wasn't going to do anything because of how I feel about my child(ren) not expecting something each time there is a special day for someone else. However, as much as it is a special day for the LO that is about to be born, it'll be a special day for DS as he becomes a big brother.

He will be with one of his Grandma's while FI and I are in the hospital, so we bought some activities for him to do at Grandma's like the Crayola Color Wonder drawing pad, a regular drawing pad, new finger paints and the Crayola Color Wonder markers. He also really loves firetrucks/ambulances/police cars, so I'll be on the look out for a new little one to put in the package. If he were older, I'd get things that related to him being a big brother, but he really doesn't get it. He already has the big brother books and what not.

All of that will go in a personalized tote bag, which will probably say Big Brother Max, or just Max.

I don't do anything like that.  My kids are 9, 6 & 2.  I think the older ones would think it was strange that a baby that was just born could get them a gift, and my 2 year old won't care either way.

We aren't doing anything for my son from the baby. However, we are going to surprise him if he's in school when the baby's born. He's 15 and a soph in HS. We are Team Green. We have it planned that my mom will deliver either pink or blue balloons to him at school with a picture of the baby wearing either the Lil Sis or Lil Bro onesie that we bought. I know that this might embarass some boys his age but not him. He goes to a smaller school and everyone knows everyone. He's a great kid with a great group of friends and he has an awesome light hearted personality.

I went to Target and got DD a new Skip Hop bookbag. I went through the dollar section and filled it with little pads of paper, crayons, markers, skickers, puzzles and her favorite snack and juice boxes..... It'll be at the hospital for her when she comes to meet the baby. Just stuff for her to do while she visits. She goes bananas for bookbags filled with crafts. Always a hit.

I made a picture frame that talked about how we all including the new baby loved DS, and we took a special hospital picture to put inside. He also picked out a stuffed animal to give DD when she was born. I'm not sure we'll do anything this time. DD is only going to be 21 months... She won't get it. DS will be almost 5, but this is his second time around this block, and he's 20 different kinds of excited as it is. If I do anything, it will be a puzzle that he can do while I'm nursing. Thinking about color wonder stuff for DD for the same purpose.

Mommy to Seth (4) and Catherine Anne (13 mo.) Excited to welcome a third child in March of 2013!

I was going to but now I'm on strict bedrest until a likely early delivery so it probably won't happen.

I am making a big sister basket for my DD.  I am putting a big sister shirt and necklace in it.  Then some coloring books, crayons, fuzzy marker boards, a new movie, puzzles, a big sister cup, snacks, and maybe a new toy.  Things to just keep her busy while everyone is ooohhing and ahhing over the new baby!

I wasn't going to to anything, but Target had some AWESOME stuff in the dollar bin this week so I went ahead and bought several things.  Instead of just giving them to her I think I'm going to wrap them and bring them to the hospital both for entertainment and for a present.  Just things like little numbers and letters workbooks, a few poem books and a dry erase board to practice writing letters on.  Nothing "big sister" specific-just fun stuff.  :)

I got her a mini version of the Beco Carrier for her dolls, but it won't be a surprise because I asked if she wanted one before I ordered it.

I noticed that her doll stroller is falling apart, so maybe we'll get her a new one since I plan to have her accompany me on walks w/ her baby sister in a stroller.

This is such a cute idea!!  Makes me wish we were Team Green.  ;)  I love it.  Thanks everyone else for the ideas.  I will probably do jewelry for her (like a necklace) and/or Build a Bear if I get the chance.  To clarify, the present isn't "from the baby" it would be from me to commemorate the occasion.  It is really meaningful and special not only for me to have another child, but for her too as she's literally prayed for a sibling for years.
