When to start purchasing big items?

I am a FTM and am curious as to when I should start begin buying things such as the crib or the dresser?

We waited until the pregnancy was viable at 25 weeks before we started buying things with DS 1 and will probably do the same thing this time too.

There is an awesome book out there called Baby Bargains. It is a great resource.

I start shopping right away. DH and I narrow down our choices as soon as we know the gender. But we dont purchase anything until 24 weeks, because I am paranoid and prefer to wait until baby is viable.

It is like telling people you are pregnant. There is no right or wrong time.

The only thing you really need time to.order is a crib and furniture. It can take 6 to 8 weeks for stores like bru, and up to 4 months for custom furniture.

We started ordering a lot of our big stuff around 20 weeks with DS right after we found out what we were having. A lot of the big things we ordered, like the crib and recliner, so it took several months to come in.

I'll probably start buying when I find out what it is but I've started looking to see how much things are going to cost so we can budget.  Hopefully we can get a lot from my SIL but you never know so I'm budgeting for everything.

We just watch for the best deals. My DH is already watching Craigslist for the few things we need that are big. With our first we purchased the crib around 20 weeks once we had the big ultrasound.

I already have a bucket car seat, and as of yesterday, stroller and glider. A friend gave me the car seat with 3 years left on it, and another friend with a toddler is moving and sold me the stroller and glider at a great price. They're just in my storage unit right now, because we have to clean out the extra room that will become the nursery.

I plan to just buy the big stuff if I come across really good deals, as we are on a budget and cannot afford to pay out full price on much.

We ordered the crib and bedding after our 2nd positive scan at 9w3d, but only because we knew they were on a limited time special and we figured that we might as well grab then as things are looking good so far.

I'm picking up stuff as I find deals on them. Just found a fantastic carseat/stroller combo on Craigslist that looks barely used for $200 under retail, not passing that one by! :)

With DS, we started buying when I was about 22 weeks. Like others, we wanted to allow plenty of time in case the furniture took a while. And it was on sale at that point, too. We were Team Green so our u/s didn't matter. I think I bought the bedding a few weeks before that, though. It was gender neutral and I loved (still love!) it and it was on clearance at Pottery Barn. It was a great deal so I didn't want to wait. I think I bought it around 14-15 weeks.

With DS we waited until we knew the sex (18 weeks).  However as soon as we had our dating ultrasound and saw/heard the heartbeat we started stocking up on diapers.  I bought one pack/box every time I went grocery shopping.

My kids are older (6 & 7), but we still have some of the baby gear that we hung onto for our neighbors when their grandkids came to visit, so we will still use that.

We really just need to buy a new infant car seat and stroller.

Oh and speaking as a mom with one of each gender, I recommend not buying gender specific strollers, bouncy seats, etc. Keep the gear neutral and buy gender specific clothing and bedding. Big Smile

My parents wanted to buy us some big items for Christmas, and I'd already done my research, so we have a crib and a carseat already. We're planning to wait on anything else for a few more months unless anything goes on a big sale.

Hang in there little one! More info in bio Lilypie Pregnancy tickers

Im all about snatching up deals so I ordered a pair of maternity jeans on sale, then I got some amazing coupons when the order came in. So I already sent those in for a free Avent bottle (the brand we will be using anyway) and a sling (another thing I was going to purchase). But I won't be making any real purchases until I know the gender and we decide if and where we are moving.

with my last pregnancy I didn't have any problems with waiting for furniture though. I just walked into BRU and got my crib, and the dresser I ordered from target came in a normal 7-10 day shipment.

I think we are going to buy our furniture in March when we are about 20 weeks right after we find out the sex of the baby.

I was going to say the same thing! We were Team Green with DD (and this time) but I have friends who went with gender specific items with their first and debated what to do with it for their second when the husband didn't want his son in a pink swing.

I think I was in the beginning of the second tri with DD. We found the crib on sale and I wanted to get her room done before I was too big/too busy to do so. Instead of wasting the money on one of those high-lo dressers designed for baby rooms only I went with a nice, solid wood piece off of CL and strapped a changing pad to it.

Yes! I know so many moms who purchased gender specific things that had an issue with their next children. No dad wants to carry his son around in a pink, floral carseat. Lol

We got most of our stuff last week. BRU was having a big sale so we got the crib, travel system, dresser and bedding.  The only thing we are waiting for is the dresser, they said the latest it would be here is Saturday.  BRU is always having sales and the lady working told us whatever we do not get at the baby shower, they will give you 10% off of. Just a heads up!
