caffiene

Im starting to be concerned that I drink too much caffine.  My dr said 2 cups a day of coffee is enough but I need at least 5 to curb a caffeine headache.  I want to do whats best for baby but not at the expensse of having migraines all the time.  Do they make caffine patches?

Caffeine patches (if they even exist) would still be putting caffeine in your system so that would still put you over the recommended limit.

ETA: so there are caffeine patches...but you definitely should not be using them.  Limit yourself to the 2 cups of coffee and your body will eventually adjust.

I would not recommend caffeine patches during pregnancy.

I'm sorry to say but you are going to need to just drink your two cups of coffee and adjust.

If you want to do what's best for baby, then do it. There's no but when it comes to doing what's best for your baby. There has to be something else you can take for migraines that aren't harmful.

Yeah, I wouldn't think the patches would be a good idea while pregnant. I use to drink WAY too many sodas. It took a few days but my body got use to only have a few a week.

Just do it, you will get use to it. You won't die from lack of caffeine. ;)

I would seriously consider quitting completely cold turkey over a weekend or something if I were you. It will suck bad for a few days and then you should be over it. I had to do that over the summer and I had about 3 awful days before the withdrawal headaches calmed down. GL!

I have cut out caffeine entirely. I would just go down one cup each day.

today - 5

tomorrow - 4

etc.

I would cut it out entirely, but you could stop and stay at 2 per day.

I would stick with the two cups and take some Tylenol if you get a headache. Your body will eventually adjust.

I went cold turkey off caffeine when I got pregnant, because I was having severe food aversion and soda tasted terrible to me and I was nauseated over everything. I'll be honest, it was really rough. I had headaches, and worst of all, incredibly bad dry mouth (like, it made my inability to eat worse, because I couldn't produce saliva to help me swallow my food - I could only eat "wet" food like soup and applesauce). It took about 1 week for the headaches to go away, and 2 weeks for the dry mouth to clear up.

If you are actually having a migraines (and not just caffeine-withdrawal headaches, which aren't the same thing), then talk to your doctor. Otherwise, try weaning off slowly. I wish I'd been able to.

Why don't you wean yourself down instead of going cold turkey.  So tomorrow, instead of drinking 5 cups, drink 4.5 cups. Drink 4.5 cups for a couple days, then drop to 4 cups, then to 3.5 cups, and so on and so forth until you get to the recommended caffeine consumption. That's what I did, and now I'm able to drink decaf without any headaches, etc.

Me - 32, DH - 32. We have been TTC #2 since January 2012.

If I could quit smoking cigarettes cold turkey the day I found out I was pregnant, you can certainly curb the caffeine. It will be an uncomfortable few days, then it will be over. But it should be a no brainer since you're doing it for the little one growing inside you who has no control of his or her environment.

Keep at 2 cups this week, then 1 cup next week, then half a cup the following week, then Tylenol the week after.

Or go cold turkey and hole yourself up for the weekend, drink a crapload of water, take a Tylenol and sleep it off.

It's worth it. If you plan on BFing you won't want baby to consume all that caffeine, so do it now before its harder.

Agreed.

Consuming excessive amounts of caffeine is linked to early miscarriage. Sorry, but this is a habit you should have worked on decreasing prior to getting pregnant. Hopefully your headaches will be better within a week or so. Also, you can take Tylenol for your headaches.

5 cups of coffee a day is a ton girl and I love my starbucks! Maybe try lattes instead of straight coffee they have less caffeine than a regular cup of coffee. Id just drop righe down to no more than 200 mg per day. I use the chart below:

Sorry, but that would still be dangerous to the baby. Unfortunately you'll just have to suck it up and deal with the headaches until your body adjusts. To me 5 cups of coffee seems to be an unhealthy amount even for a non pregnant person.

Sounds like you're quite addicted. However, it's not that hard a habit to quit. Just cut it out and take tylenol when you get a headache. You WILL get a headache, and it will suck for a couple of days, but keep sucking down the water and you'll be fine.

In the end, it's just a couple of days out of your life that you're uncomfortable. So what?

Everyone has given great advice.

I was drinking 1-2 cups per day but then quit cold turkey. If I wake up with a headache I now have a cup of Half Caf (Green Mountain makes a delicious one) and it does the trick.

GL!

I drank two cups daily before learning I was pregnant, but now I have weaned myself to a cup every 2-3 days.

I don't think you have to completely cut it out, but you do need to stay within your OBs recommended servings.

The say it takes a lot of caffeine to actually show an effect on the baby after he/she is born. HOWEVER, caffeine dramatically increases you risk of miscarriage, especially in the quantity you drink. It is up to you what you do with that information.

Maybe also try spreading the caffeine you do drink throughout the day.  I agree with PPs about slowly going down to 2 cups, and then maybe have 4 half-caff cups a day, and then if you can, increase the amount of decaf and decrease the amount of regular in the cups.

Good luck!  It's a hard habit to break, especially with the fatigue that comes with pregnancy.

ETA: I just checked out the caffeine graph- also consider ice coffee- with ice and milk, it really waters down the caffeine!

That's what I switched to.  I don't drink soda, so my only caffiene were the 2 cups of coffee I had in the mornings. I now use the half-caf ones, but even using those I end up maybe drink half the cup.

Being a parent involves making sacrifices for your child. I have a terrible caffeine habit. I went cold turkey, suffered through withdrawal headaches for weeks, and now I just deal with being exhausted and having migranes. In my opinon, that's just what you do.

This. Or get your caffeine from another source that can be spread out more (ie a can of coke is 40 something mg of Caffeine, so you can have more of those then a coffee, even though they are still not good for you.)

I would LOOOOVE to know what logic brought you to "coffee = bad, caffeine patches = acceptable".  Did you think it's just the coffee and not the caffeine?  I seriously can't wrap my head around this.  Caffeine patches (per their NAME) contain caffeine.  So why would you think substituting coffee with caffeine patches be ANY safer!?

I only was drinking maybe one cup every few days to help curb my migranes prepregnancya pregnancy which came unexpectedly and continue with that as it stands. My doc approved it, especially considering migranes for me= vomiting=equals higher risk for dehydrationwhich is what happened when I went cold turkey. Not to mention I have a 3 and 4 year old to care for which is near impossible when I spend my time throwing up in the bathroom, too weak or sick to do much of anything.
I say definitely cut down as much as you can, eliminate it completely if you can, to each his own :

Your body will adjust to less caffeine it just takes a few days. In the meantime, keep tylenol on hand for your headache. My doctor recommended no more than 200mg/day of caffeine. It's hard for me to but i am trying to stick to that!
