Is this contractions?

I'm 4 days overdue and have yet to know what a single contraction feels like. When I was checked at 40 weeks, I was contracting regularly, just not feeling them. I have a sharp pain that goes across the top of my bump that comes and goes. They aren't regular or timeable, and they dont shoot down my stomach like I heard they're supposed to. It just comes then goes a couple seconds later.

It could be...? People describe and feel contractions differently, so it's hard for any one of us to tell you if what you are experiencing is a contraction. However, what I can tell you is that if they are only lasting a couple of seconds and there is no pattern, they likely aren't productive/progressive.

5-1-1 is the general rule, but, of course, there are women who are exceptions to this rule.

It could be. I hate to say this because it annoyed me last time when I was waiting to go into labor. You will KNOW. There will be no doubt.

^^This. Potentially the single, least helpful thing, but very true. I didn't feel contractions my entire pregnancy, then the night I went into labor, I laid down because I felt off and suddenly my entire belly went tight (like I'd clenched it, except, I hadn't and couldn't stop it) and my first thought was "that was a contraction".

However, as pp said, it can be different for many people, so it is possible you're having some strange labor pains/pre-labor pains. I think I've even read that sometimes only parts of the uterus contract when it's Braxton Hicks (don't quote me on it!).
