Friend advised to delay conception efforts to allow BC to exit system

Hello,

My friend and I were chatting about what we are both doing to prepare for pregnancy in the coming months and she mentioned the nurse she spoke with at her OBGYN's office told her to stop taking her BC (duh) and use condoms for three months and avoid conceiving so her system would be "cleansed" of the pill. I know it can takes months for one's cycle to regulate after being on the pill, but that wasn't mentioned to my friend at all. The nurse's explanation was that one shouldn't conceive soon after stopping BC because the pill can negatively affect the growing fetus. I have never heard of this before and thought it was odd. I always thought BC left your system quickly - hence the need to take it everyday. Surely people conceive healthy babies soon after stopping the pill...

What say you? Have you heard this warning before?

There is no need to wait. It actually only takes a few days for the hormones to leave your system. From there, your body takes over. That can be an issue if your body isn't regulating right away but it's not chemicals from the pill.

Even women who've gotten pregnant on the pill have been fine.

Your friend's nurse needs to get some more current info.

Apparently that nurse lives in 1985. Nice.

It's gone 24 hours later. Hence why you have to take it daily.

Ditto to what this bumpie said. No need to wait but talk to your doc if you are still nervous to put your mind at ease. I checked WebMD and it said the only reason to wait was to become more fertile/optimize fertility. However if you are already fertile (which who knows I guess) then I say go for it. Of course I am not a medical professional. :) GOOD LUCK

I've read a bit about this, & my doc recommended that to me as well, but not to be "cleansed" of the pill, but rather to allow the body to go through at least one natural cycle on its own, to make sure the endometrial lining would be healthy, etc.  I believe it's similar to how the doc will tell women to wait a couple months after a m/c, just to make sure everything is functioning properly & on its own before trying again.  Also, it does make the pregnancy easier to date if you've had at least one cycle off of BC.  But the whole "harm to the fetus" thing is totally not true, studies have proved that wrong, & women who get pregnant while still on the pill in fact, have no harm to their babies.

Lol. Anyway, yeah what everyone else said. It can take awhile for the body to regulate...
Mine still is 3 months later...
But the bc will be gone in 24 hours and will not harm a fetus. My doctor told
Me to just stop taking them when I wanted and said I was good to start trying right away.

I've heard this when women have IUDs removed but I've never heard that about birth control pills.

Was your friend using the depo shot? That's the only one I can think of that stays in your system for an extended period of time, because, well, it's meant to.

The only reason I've heard to wait is so that you know what your cycles are like for dating purposes.

Not what my doctor said. He said once the IUD is removed the hormones are gone pretty quickly. He said the chance of a m/c from getting pregnant right away is the same for everyone who gets pregnant. 30%

When I got of BCP when I tried to conceive DD my doctor recomended waiting a month for dating purposes. We waited a month, got pregnant the first month trying and then m/c. Do what feels right for you. I don't think you need to wait 3 months.

Thanks, all. I agree that it seems like bunk advice. She is not taking Depo, just the pills. The thing that worried me most was that my friend was/is going to heed the nurse and doctor's directives without much questioning - hopefully I planted a seed in her head to do a bit of research and not blindly abide someone bc of their title. Her doc is notorious in our community for inducing and performing CSs to accommodate her leisure activities and this incident confirms I will not be using her if/when I get pregnant!

 Toodle-loo!
