Kit

this nn keeps coming up so I looked into what it can be short for...

girls: Kristen, Christine, K/Catherine, Kirsten, etc

boys: Christopher, Christian, Christoff, etc

Is K/Catherine related to Christopher/Christine/Kristen/etc?  Or do you just also get Kit from Kat (nn for Katherine)?

Is there a boy equivalent to Katherine (like Christopher/Christine)?

Katherine and Christopher have very different Greek sources and aside from the "Christ" part for Christpher and Christian (root for Christine/a) they are different too. I'm guessing it's a Victorian rhyming thing for Christopher and then the Kat to Kitty/Kit thing for Katherine.

Not all nicknames need to be a shortened version of the original.  I think Kit falls into that category.   I can see it being used as a nn with just about anything.

FWIW, I have a friend who's name is Melanie.  Her family has always called her Kip.... don't know why.. they just do!
