2 month old won't sleep in crib

My 2 month old son will not sleep in his crib but he sleeps beautifully when I'm holding him. When I feed him in the evening he falls asleep pretty quickly but as soon as I lay him down in his crib he wakes up. Then, he either lays there wide awake or cries his little eyes out until we pick him up. Does anyone have any advice on what we can do to help him transition from sleeping on the couch with me to sleeping in his crib?

Are you putting him down flat on his back?  Maybe a wedge would help if he isn't used to laying flat (or putting a few books under the legs at the head of the crib).  You could also try propping him on his side (with a receiving blanket behind him).  My LO will sleep for 1-2 hours at a time in her crib, but never if she's flat on her back.

You could try to put a hot water bottle or a warm rice bag in the crib for awhile before you put him in there (I have a store-bought rice bag, but you could add rice (not instant) to a tube sock).  I usually leave it in there, with a blanket over it to keep the heat in, for like 20 minutes before I lay her down.  They like being warm, and sometimes the cold crib sheets are enough to wake them up.

One of my friends has also started swaddling her baby in the t-shirt she wore that day, and baby has done MUCH better in his crib/cradle since he can smell her.

Have you tried a noise machine?  We have one with a heart beat that helps LO calm down.

Good luck!

Ditto the PP - there are a lot of things you could try (or maybe you already did?) ....swaddle tightly, some kind of soother like the seahorse or sleep sheep, sound machine, rock n play or swing. Good luck!

These are all great ideas, I may try them myself.

OP, are you putting him down as soon as he drifts off? I've read that you should wait til theyre through their REM cycle, about 20 min, before putting them down to have the smallest risk of them waking up. It's how we have to deal with DD. Before bed, I'll feed her, but if I put her down right away she wakes up and gets all crazy. But if I wait until she's completely limp, her breathing is regular, she isn't doing weird grimaces, and her eyes stop moving, she won't wake up.

We also use a plush blanket as a fitted sheet to add some warmth. We just tuck it in like a regular fitted sheet. You just have to make sure it's big enough to cover the whole mattress.

Also, try experimenting with different sleep outfits. Try a couple different swaddles, try swaddling with one or both arms out, a regular sleep n play, or a long sleeved onesie wi the socks and a blanket tight over the legs just up to the waist or top of the diaper tucked in on either side of the mattress. This last one actually worke really well last night fr DD because she wasn't really feeling the swaddleme. Beware, though. If he's anything like DD, you may need to try a couple of outfits a night to find what he's in the mood for.

We just transitioned our 12 week old into the crib at night and so far have been successful.  I started putting him in there for naps during the day about a month ago.  After much experimenting here's what works for us - mattress at an incline, tight swaddling, soft lullabies and white noise playing all night, and I take my t-shirt that I wore that day and place it in the far corner of the crib.  If I ever forget the t-shirt he reminds me by waking up about a half hour later, so I know that works really well.
