Sorry- another vent about weight...

So, let me start by saying this isn't a "how much have you gained?" type of post- mostly a vent about my OB and her comment today.

Everything I've seen says 25-35 is the recommended weight gain for someone with a normal BMI carrying one child. During my first pregnancy I gained almost 70 lbs so weight has been a huge issue for me this time. Granted it took me almost a year, but I lost every pound plus more and was in the best shape of my life afterwards. So- I go in this morning for my checkup and I've only gained 1 lb since my last appointment two weeks ago, I'm at a total of 30 lbs up this pregnancy and I'm 33 weeks, something I'm fairly proud of considering my last experience. Going into the pregnancy I told myself I would be happy staying under 40 lbs and I'm on track to do so.

My OB tells me today that I should be closer to 22 lbs at this point, so I need to cut my sugar out. That it's just hard to lose weight after the baby, especially with two kids at home. I thought about asking if she remembered how much I gained last time and that I lost every last bit- and that I'm not concerned about the weight from a vanity standpoint, only a health standpoint for my child.

URGH!!! Ok- vent over. Oh, and my nurse says "I'm predicting a Valentine's baby, I'm no doctor or anything, but you're getting big". Ok- I'm ALL BELLY!!! Of course I'm getting big- I have a giant inside me (DD was 7-12 and 22" so we assume this boy will be every bit of that with more weight on him).

Happy Monday!!

I am in the same boat as you! First time around I gained 80 lbs, but I had pre-e too.  I worked so hard to lose it all.  It took forever! This time, I told myself I wanted to do better, and so far I have.  I know what I weighed when I got pregnant, but somehow the Dr office has that number wrong.  They said I weighed 15 lbs LESS than what I actually weighed, so now they're constantly on my case about weighing too much! If you subtract the 15 lbs they are wrong by, I've only gained 25 so far, a feat I am very proud of!

My OB is actually very nice about it and never says a word, but the nurses, OMG... I want to strangle those stupid witches!

I hate that they tell you the guidelines are 25-35 but then it seems like every OB really only wants 25. What the heck is the point of having a range if anything above 25 is bad?

I've gained 32 this time at 36 weeks and last time was up 29 at 36 weeks when I delivered. I was told to "aim for 25 but 30 would okAY." Oh well. I'm usually 115 so I'm not going to beat myself up if I hit 35 pounds. Last time I lost it all by about 4 months and I know how to eat right and exercise to lose it.

Luckily (?) for me, since I'm being monitored for IUGR (small baby) they can't give me too much grief because, really, how can you worry that my baby is struggling to get enough nutrition and then tell me to cut back on calories, KWIM?

I saw a different dr at my ob practice last week, and when he was looking at my chart, he says, "oh, I see you enjoyed eating over the holidays."  Gee, thanks.

It's funny.  I'm 33 weeks and I've also gained about 30 lbs.  Whenever I see the doctor in my practice who's never had kids, she gives me some new tips on what I should be doing to control my weight gain. It's completely different when I see the doctor in the practice that has been pregnant herself twice before.   When I bring up my weight with her, she looks at me like I'm crazy for even worrying about it, tells me all my tests and blood work show I'm healthy, and tells me I look great. Doctors are operating from their own biases and past experiences no matter how professional they are.  Some are way more numbers focused than they need to be.  Try not to let it get you down!

I will be 30 weeks tomorrow and I have gained like 20 so far. At this point, I just stopped caring, and riding out the rest of the time I have left. I'm over it, and I plan on working out anyways when this is all over. lol

Your weight seems fine though this time around. Remember once that water breaks, a lot of weight is just gonna come off.

When I was pg with my 1st, there was this sweet nurse who weighed me at every appt and no matter how much I gained, she would say "That's great! Wonderful that baby is growing! You look wonderful!" Even though I knew she was lying (esp toward the end when I was a big cow), I never forgot how kind she was. I wish all nurses were like her, and that all Dr's would get rid of the 25-35 lb rule.

I gained 46 lbs with  #1 and 42 lbs with #2, and I am on track to gain 40 this time around too. All 3 times the Dr has lectured me about my weight gain. I am a strict vegetarian, eating lots of brown rice, veggies, and tofu, so its not like I am eating at McDonalds everyday! My body just gains that much weight, and it allllll comes off no problem (thank you, breastfeeding) once baby is born.

Try not to let the comments get to you. Easier said that done, I know!

Wow- I think that beats the time the LPN said something along the lines of me enjoying the fair food when I had a larger than normal gain back at 20 weeks... Awww- I love how everything becomes a completely normal topic to discuss when you're pregnant.

Do I tell my OB that she seems to be a bit overweight? NO- that's common courtesy...

So true. Your statement reminded me of an instance I heard about one of our ER docs. Let me just preface this with, she's one of my least favorite doctors to work with. So apparently the patient needed to be transferred to another hospital for the sole purpose of using a bariatric radiology machine(can't recall if it was MRI or CT) and on the transfer paperwork she actually put as reason for transfer "patient is too fat." One of our overweight nurses saw this and complained big time and wrote her up. Doctors are not gods, they can be a$$holes too.

I hear you. I gained 50 with my first and am looking at a 40 lb weight gain with this one. Better but not ideal but what can you do? I'm not pigging out, I passed my GD screening with flying colors and my blood pressure is perfect. I know it's the doctors job to make sure I am aware of the risks associated with excessive weight gain but so far everything seems good so just leave me alone. I figured out how to lose the weight last time and I will again.

I'm 38.5 weeks and have gained 31lbs so far, never once has a midwife or dr. said anything about my weight. At 30 weeks I had only gained 18 and by 35 I had gained nearly 30. It comes in shifts depending on  your baby's growth a lot of the time.

I think I would say something to your dr. I just don't think sometimes they realize what they're saying. They get so busy, maybe they lose track of us being humans, not just cattle to get through in 15 mins. A nurse friend of mine said sometimes it's important to remind doctors of that fact. They lose the purpose because they're trying to do so much so fast in a little amount of time. No true excuse for being nasty like the "Oh I see you enjoyed eating" crap, but that guy needs a reality check and some etiquette anyhow!

My little miracle.

I'm with you. I gained 55-60 lbs with DD1 and DD2. I'm up 28 lbs at 29 weeks and really happy about that. I've been working out and generally making better food choices (besides all those Christmas cookies). My goal is 35-40 lbs total this time. Luckily, my OB isn't worried about weight gain at all. I don't know what I'd do if she was.

This is so true. My OB has had 4 kids herself. I think she's more worried about the actual medical tests than a few extra pounds.
