Reflux - Cereal question

My DS was diagnosed with silent reflux and put on Zantac a week ago.   The Zantac has helped a little, but he is still having problems sleeping well at night (he thrashes around, I am assuming from being in pain) even though we have angled his mattress so his head is higher.   Today the Pediatrician suggested we put rice cereal in his bottles to help keep the acid down - he is almost 9 weeks.   Has anybody used the cereal for reflux and has it helped ?

Cereal in bottles is a choking hazard according to many different people, including the AAP website but some pedis do recommend it for reflux. If you trust your pedi then go for it.

If you are not comfortable, Maybe try one of the reflux formulas? Similac or Enfamil AR...I think they have rice in them?

I am in a similar situation. My son is almost 7 weeks and I was told that they believe he has silent reflux. He wasn't prescribed medication, but I was told to try rice cereal in every other bottle. We are really not sure if we should try the cereal or not, so I am interested to hear other experiences.

Our pedi (whom we no longer use for numerous reason) recommended this for DD#1 at 2 weeks. Honestly, it didn't help and all it did was seriously constipate her. We tried the Similac Spit Up formula with DS and had the same results with serious constipation. DS was on Zantac and it wasn't helping, so the dr moved him to Prevacid. It works MUCH better for him.

FFing....I have a friend who son had reflux and Zantac stopped working and only Prevacid really worked.   I'm concerned about the cereal because they say it could cause allergies later on, but my son is in pain especially at night and I just want him to feel better.

I do this on pedi's recommendation. We tried 3 different formulas, Zantac, angling bed, smaller more frequent feedings, and now finally cereal in bottle each feeding.

He was instantly a different child with cereal. We use 1 teaspoon to 4 ounces of formula. So 1 and 1/2 teaspoons for 6 ounces. Spit up significantly reduced, no more screaming in pain.

I figure if pedi recommends it, it's benefits far outweigh its drawbacks.

Maybe try one of the formulas for spit up? Enfamil ar has rice cereal in it. Reflux sucks both ds's had/have it.

My son had really bad reflux (and is still medicated at 8 yo), but the best thing our ped GI told us was to let him sleep in an infant to toddler rocker by fisher price. (http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-Infant-To-Toddler-Rocker-Blue-Green/dp/B000WUB9O4)

With the kickstand in use and the seat in the down position, it is the perfect angle. My son slept in it until he was 6 months old. Make sure the Zantac is alcohol free. Lastly, if is not getting better, see a ped GI. So worth it!
