Midwifery anyone?

I was just about to call my family doctor to schedule my first u/s and it occurred to me that if I plan on doing the midwife / natural childbirth thing, I should probably call them.  So I did.  They're contacting me tomorrow to arrange a first meeting (in a few weeks) where we discuss expectations, etc.  I'm hoping they do an ultrasound at that time too. What's nice is in Ontario (where I live), midwives are covered under your provincial health insurance.

Is anyone else considering a midwife and/or a doula?

I used a midwife with DS#2 and it was AH-MAZING!  I think because with DS#1 I had an old crotchety doctor who could barely remember my name (I really don't think he did, ever) and my birth experience was horrific (yeah, he broke my tailbone with the forceps).

So with #2 I went to the midwife because above all else I didn't want to break my tailbone again.   I wasn't into natural/drug-free childbirth for the holisitc aspect, more so that I could move around and push in different positions to not break my tailbone.

Ended up that I adore my midwife.  She was (and is) so amazing.  She was texting with me the whole time i was in labor, she met me at the hospital and was in my room thoe whole time.   The birthing experience was so fast and easy (painful, but easy).  But 2 hours of pain is way easier then not being able to sit down with a newborn for 3 months.

If you have a normal/low-risk pregnancy, i would 100% recommend a mid-wife.  My opinion is at the end of the day, the nurses are the ones that do 99% of the work during your labor and delivery, so if you have an extra educated nurse there that knows you already, it's a win-win.

Good luck!!!  I hope it works out!!

When I called my OB's office to make a first appointment they asked if I wanted to meet with the OB or the certified nurse midwife.  I chose the midwife!  I'm hoping I will be able to stay with her, but it also makes me feel good that she is in the same practice as my OB of choice.  If I become high risk at any time, it will be easy to transfer to him.

My practice has midwives. Generally they have the midwives deliver, unless there are any complications, then the dr comes in. So far, I love them! they are good a listening. Whatever I want or prefer they've been great at giving advice and guiding me.

I'm using a home midwife. I have my first appointment this Wednesday (after three appts with my RE). I have some initial concerns, but hope to get some good information at my appointment.

PS - I'd really like to have a water birth. Anyone else considering this?

We went with a midwife last time and have this time as well. It's just a great experience! In BC it's covered as well and I wonder why more people don't choose to have a midwife.

I would certainly like the option.  I heard a lot of women choose to labour in the water, but finally give birth outside the pool.

The main reason I want a midwife is that i want to be in control of the birth.  I want it done on my time and I want to be able to move around as much as I need to.

Honestly, I think there's a lot of misinformation/ignorance regarding midwives and natural birth.  For example, I didn't know until a few months ago that they're covered by our insurance.  Not all provinces cover midwives, which is a shame.

Best of luck to everyone!  I can't wait for my first appointment.

I had a homebirth, with a midwife, with my son and I'll be doing the same with this baby.  I couldn't imagine doing it any different - the pregnancy and birth were both so great, as well as the aftercare...not having to leave the house in those early days was sweet :)

Where I'm from, over 75% of pregnant women go with a midwife for their pregnancy and delivery. OBs are reserved for those who have high risk pregnancies, or just want the comfort of having a high qualified medical professional.

Midwives are government funded and continuity of care is a big deal here so if you go for a midwife, you see them from 8 weeks preg to 8 week post natal.

Although I was under OB care to get pregnant, I decided not to use him for my preg care and delivery. I just felt that OB services can be quite clinical, impersonal and the appointments are always very brief rather than being thorough and getting to know you well.

In the end, it's a totally personal decision but I'm happier with my midwife so far than I have been with my OB the whole time.

Yes!  I have had two hospital births with a CNM and plan on doing the same this time around.  With my first I switched from an OB to a midwife midway through the pregnancy, and the difference in the level of care I received was night and day.  I am so grateful for OB's, we need their knowledge and expertise for many situations.  But, for a normal, uncomplicated pregnancy I think a midwife is the way to go.

Also just wanted to mention that if you haven't been there already, the natural birth board can be a great resource for you.

I am actually having a midwife as well :) I am really excited. I do not want to be confined to a bed if I don't have to while i labor. I think it would just feel so much better to be able to move around and allow my body to do what its meant to do. I really like the idea of a waterbirth and plan on doing that! I really love my midwife. She is not pushy and gives me her advice and lets me make decisions based on what I feel is best. I feel relaxed with her! Although this is my first.. so I really can't compare my midwife to an OB.

I went into my last delivery with an open mind about a water birth. I labored in the tub, then got out so my MW could break my water, then I got back in and things started to float. I was out of that tub so fast. But it was great for laboring in, and I will definitely use it again is time until my water breaks.

I went with a CNM last time, and will be with the same for this pregnancy. Although, I chose to go with an epidural and didn't go to a birth center. My clinic has both CNM and OBs that work at the University hospital near me.
