MIL tip

I got a tip from mom in law the other day and wondered what you all thought? She said that roughing up your nipples (like washing just less than gently in the shower) can help breastfeeding soreness later on.
Any experienced mom's that can say 'yea' or 'nay'?

I've heard this before as well- I would just let your body do it's thing. You'll have plenty of months to suffer from sore nipples...why bring it on sooner?

Yeah, don't bother. Even if it DOES help, it'd help a small enough amount that you wouldn't be able to tell.

Although I don't breastfeed, I have learned that grandparents, while well-meaning, do not give the best advice, because so much has changed in 20-30 years. The advice is especially bad when it starts with: "When I had babies..."

definitely do NOT! Breastfeeding should not hurt, if it hurts the latch is incorrect.

100% crap.  It's not good for your nipples and baby will break them in just fine on it's own.  DO NOT DO IT.

Have you ever had anyone stuck to your nipples for twelve to fourteen hours a day? It hurts even if the latch is perfect.

The only thing my midwife said to do was to use gentle or no soap and moisturize now to prevent itching or help with itching. No roughing them up, just being nice to them Wink

My MIL gave me the same advice--but she said to use sandpaper. I LOL'd in her face, and no, and I did not do it!!! As if my nipples weren't sensitive enough from being pregnant, right?!?!

Is this a MIL thing where they are just trying to be cruel? Geez, you would think that having been through it they would have learned...I guess for her it's been over 25 years, so maybe she forgot. It's horrible advice, and mean to boot.

Your nipples will be sore at first, on top of feeling contractions every time you nurse. I remember crying a little. But after a few days, if you stick with it, you actually get used to the feeling and then you don't feel it at all. I also used nipple cream, and I think it helped to heal the skin.

Breastfeeding is really not that bad, and I'm sorry she caused you any worry...but at least she didn't tell you to scour your poor nipples with sandpaper!!!!

MIL advise should be flushed down the toilet! I swear it is something in them that just wants to make you miserable!

Save yourself some pain and tune her out! Leave the nips alone!

Do not do that! It's an old wives tale and is really not good for your nips.It will not help "rough them up".

Haha! I agree! I hurts even if the latch is perfect.

To OP, definitely do NOT follow this woman's advice. All you'll do is cause yourself unnecessary pain before baby is born. My nipples are hurting just thinking about this advice. Yikes!

I heard the same before DS was born. I think its crap. Breastfeeding causes all different soreness, pains and feelings good and bad that you cant prepare for.

Latch is super super important!! OP if pain doesn't settle down or it intensifies after LO has latched and suckled initially then get your latch looked at. It shouldn't be agonising!

Your nipples will probably feel tender but roughing them up before hand will just give you sore nipples now. Don't do it. Invest in some good nipple cream. Vinegar in boiled water (cooled) is also very good.

I don't believe in doing this, but to each their own! Your nipples will hurt a lot, but you can use things like lanolin and my personal favorite these gel pads I bought at target! I forget the name, but I kept them in the fridge and used after nursing. AMAZING!
