MRSA

Hi ladies

so I've had a rough week learning that dd and i contracted mrsa. It started after gall bladder surgery. A month later I developed an small abscess under neath my breast. I went into a walk in clinic and the drained it but never swabbed it. They threw antibiotics in my face and sent me home. Every two months or so I would get another specifically when I would wax. I'd get them treated and I would ask my doctor why I keep getting them. He swabbed my nose to test me for mrsa and came back negative I was relieved.  I got one on my face a few months later they drained it swabbed it and came back postive for mrsa. I was petrified. Then dd got them on her bum so I went to the doctors they swabbed her and it came back positive for mrsa. They finally treated us both with clindamycin which is the correct antibiotic.  Doctors keep saying its not a big deal. Yet everything I've read online tells me otherwise! I'm so scared its all I think about all the time. I'm expecting another baby which is scaring me deeply. I'm praying that we don't get another reoccurrence but its still possible. Is anyone else dealing with this? Has anyone's lo got it after delivery? Am I always supposed to worry about getting another infection? What have you done to deal or stop it completely?

I had MRSA when I was pregnant with DD. It was easily treated with a/b and then I had to pass the MRSA test 3 times in order to not have to deliver in isolation. I passed all 3 tests, and haven't had any signs of it since then. I did have an abcess like a year ago, but it was unrelated and the swab was negative when they drained it.

MRSA infections can be dangerous but they are in fact quite common and something like what you and DD have had should not have you concerned as long as it was treated.

Everyone has staph that lies within their nostrils, it's just whether it becomes active or not. I developed active MRSA when I was pregnant with my daughter 3 years ago. I was neer diagnosed correctly during my pregnancy, but they kept draining and I was antibiotics the entire time. When she was a year old, it flared up again. This time I got a 2nd opinion l, which was swobbed and came back . I was so upset. I got flare ups even while not pregnant. A lot develop from a small pimple that gets infected and can develop into a MRSA spot. Being pregnant again, it's a little worse. But I had not had to go on any antibiotics or get any drained. I usually get them on my chin, but have gotten one on my bum and last week one on my shoulder. I just clean my face and use the staph ointment they gave me to put on the spots and in my nose. I also was the spots in the shower with hibeclens. If the areas get really big and painful I see my dermatologist to get kenalogsp? which is a very diluted steroid injection and the spot goes away within a day. Sorry so long, but hope it helps. Sucks I know, but don't worry. Just be as clean as possible and if area drains, don't touch anything else until washing your hands :

I had MRSA two years ago and just received antibiotics, too. I haven't had any recurrences but my body takes much longer to heal from any sort of bite, rash, etc and I'm more tired than I used to be (in general, pre-pregnancy).

Dont read the stuff online. It will freak you out.

My DD1 had MRSA at 16 months on her vagina.  It apparently started from a diaper rash and become much worse.  She spent 5 days with IV antibiotics and them draining it.  Long story short we bleached everything we could in our house...towels, sheets, blankets, etc.  We also used some cream they gave us for our nostrils for a month as well as bathing with antibacterial soap.  She has never had another one.  I hope you guys figure it out.

Thanks ladies angelndavid what kind of anti bacterial soap did you use? Im thinking of staruing bleach baths. I'm waiting to see if she'll test postive in her nose. I was negatives few months ago for some reason but I'm planning on getting retested with dh. I've bleached and disinfected so much around the house. I think I'm developing OCD...

I've dealt w/ recurring boils, but I tested negative for MRSA.  I am terrified of having an active infection during delivery.  I don't think there's really anything you can do except treat the boils as they occur.  It absolutely sucks.  I have read that decreasing the amount of processed carbs and sugar in your diet can help prevent them.  I'm sorry you're dealing with this.  I would talk to your OB about what it means for you and your baby.

We used Cetaphil Antibacterial Gentle Cleansing Bar.  You can get it at your local pharmacy.  Just make sure its Antibacterial kind.  Our pedi recommended bleach baths as well but honestly it scared me to put my 16 month old in a bleach bath. Anyone who lives in your home should use the cream in their nostrils as well. BTW my DD is 6.5 and hasn't had another boil develop.

I have had staph but have never tested positive for MRSA and I have never had any outbreaks during pregnancy. I was given the antibiotics, the cream for your nose and fingernails and bought hypacleanse (spelling) at the store. since using that I have not had any re occurrences.

Good luck.

PrincessFiona9:

I had MRSA while I was pregnant with DD, also. I took the antibiotics and did some cleaning/sterilizing and it hasn't come back in 3 years. Now, my doctor didn't tell me about needing 2 negative MRSA tests (just the nasal swabs) before delivery so I was on quarantine at delivery, unable to leave my room to even walk the halls and people had to wear yellow gowns to come in my room! I'd had 1 negative test before delivery, but apparently need 2 negatives for the hospital--so definitely look into it.

Some things to remember--throw away any shaving razors you've been using, use an antibacterial bath soap for a while. I used Safegaurd brand soap and wash all bedding, clothing towels in hot water/bleach.
