Measuring 3 weeks behind

Went to have an ultrasound today(im 36w1d). The baby weighs 5lbs.2oz, but he his measuring 3 weeks behind(33w). I am so confused and scared.. Doctor said come back next monday and if he is still behinfd then i need to deliver. I was wondering have anyone has had this happen, or if there baby is measuring behind? Does that mean that he lungs, kidney, heaart things like that are they 33 weeks also? I have to have a c-section so i think thats why i have to deliver early he doesnt want me to go into labor.

When my sister was pregnant with my niece, she measured small. She had to have a c-section because her amniotic fluid was low. She was 37 weeks when she had my niece. She was very healthy, but small weighing 4lbs 9oz. Good luck! Hope everything goes well at the next appointment.

I'm confused as to why they would want you to deliver early if baby is measuring small? Unless its an issue with your fluid.
I'm measuring 2 weeks behind but they never seemed too concerned. DD was late and was delivered under 7lbs. So maybe your like me and just make little peanuts!

I was induced with DS1 for IUGR at 36 weeks (5 pounds, 3 oz) and this LO is also measuring behind.

If the growth is proportional (where the head, stomach and femur length are all measuring the same) there is a good chance that the baby could just be small.  I know in both my cases, the growth wasn't/isn't proportional which is a concern. It could be caused by a variety of reasons but my doctor said it's basically when your baby is on a strict diet and really doesn't need to be.  If may be safer and better for your LO to be on the outside so he/she can grow properly.

Good luck!

Some babies stop growing at the end of third tri. They are better off out then in because they aren't getting enough nutrients on the inside and are at an increased risk of fetal demise. Some IUGR babies die in utero after 37 weeks for this reason. If baby is measuring small they will often do NSTs and growth ultrasounds to make sure baby is still doing well and that they haven't stopped growing completely.

Well, my daughter was born at 36 weeks weighing almost exactly that and she's perfectly healthy. Did you suddenly lose percentiles or something or did they just do one U/S and say LO is small?

Small isn't automatically a problem. They may just be being cautious.

And no, measuring small does NOT mean that the baby is less developed. Not at all. Size has little to do with lung/heart development.

As I said, my 36 weeker was about 5lb, 4 oz and her only issue was some jaundice. My current LO is measuring about the same and they are keeping an eye on her but not very concerned unless she shows other signs of distress.

OK.. A my last ultrasound baby measured 1 week behind. Doctor said fluids are good. Bbaby head is measuring 30-32 weeks, other things are around 33 weeks. He is in the 50 percentiles. The first thing i thought was if i had to have him early then he will be in the nicu even though i will be 37w. My docotr wants to wait till monday a whole week later to see. That just seem odd to me. Why wait so long, what if it gets worst.

As with many issues brought up on here, if your experienced doctor tells you something, you don't need to second guess his opinion on an Internet board: you need to ask questions to him, or ask for a second opinion.

We are not doctors, and it always makes me wonder when I see posters argue against your doctor's opinion because *they* never had a problem with a smaller baby.

Trust is important, and if you don't trust your OB, I don't know who you can trust on pregnancy matters, but certainly not Internet people... Call and ask, why the wait, get your doctor to explain things to you! I understand that you may have been in shock and not thought of those questions, but it is their job to answer them.

He wants you to wait to see if their is a change in growth. If baby shows no growth, then they may want to take him early. On the other hand, if baby continues to grow, then they will probably want him to bake longer. It is a tough waiting game to be stuck in, but they don't want to rush to do something that may or may not be in the best interest of your baby.
