pacifiers

So mY LO has started sucking on her keft wrist. It i driving me crazy. I try to offer the paci but she will not take it. She has never had any interest in it from day one. Do I just let her suck on her hand? how do I get herbyo take a pacI without sitting for hours holding it in.

DS is the same way. He will suck on his fist but will not take the paci. I don't see it being a problem.

If you're holding the pacifier in her mouth she's not really taking it unless she's actually sucking on it...

I would just let her suck on her wrist/fist. Joey does that and he likes it a lot better than the pacifier.

Have you tried different kinds of paci's. Some babies will only take certain ones. My friends baby is 6 mos old and refuses to take any paci except her premmie paci. She looks totally weird sucking on that tiny thing but her mom can't get her to take a normal one.

My son refuses to take the Dr. Brown ones. Try different kinds and see if she will take any of them.

Sucking on their hand is a developmental milestone/phase. It probably won't last.

My LO won't take a pasifier either

If you want LO to suck a paci, try a few different types. I don't see a problem with sucking her fist, though. Also, you can try putting gas drops or something like that on the paci and see if she'll take it then.

We've tried about 6 different pacifiers. DD doesn't want any of them. She also finds her hands and thinks those are disgusting too, lol. I've given up on it. DD#1 wasn't hard to wean off the paci, but now this one won't be an issue at all...at least that's what I tell myself.

Although annoying, the nice thing about baby's soothing by sucking on wrists and fingers is that you don't have to constantly fish around finding one for them because it's right there and they can find it on their own. Sometimes it is harder to ween off a thumb or finger because you can't take it away, but otherwise I don't see any harm. If you do want LO to use a paci though, like pp suggested, just keep trying different brands. Also, give LO a chance before or after feedings to try out the paci while their "suck" is already going. GL!

We do gave about 4 different kinds. She really doesnt care for any of them. The longest she has kept one in id forv about 30 seconds. My DH hates that she sucks her hand. I say who cares as long as she is not screaming.

You might just have to give it a little time. My LO wouldn't take the avent soothie, so I went and got some gumdrops and playtex binkies. She didn't want any of them at first, then had a few days of being okay with the gumdrop, one day of loving the binkie, and now she likes the soothie again. I have a feeling were going to settle on the soothie, but I'm just following her lead! It took about a week for her to keep the paci in for any amount of time without us holding it, though!

Definitely keep trying different brands. We figured out DD prefers the latex ones over silicone, my mom said I was the same way. Also warm it up first so it's more like your nipple. Running under warm water is the fastest way, or just hold it in your hand for a few minutes.

I agree that it is a developmental milestone, and she will probably grow out of it.

This. At this age, they're discovering themselves and that's part of it. I see it as a plus because it helps them soothe, so they have something right there in the middle of the night to suck if they just want comfort.

Now, if he's in middle a school still sucking his thumb or wrist, that'd be the time to try and kick the habit.

I noticed the shape of the pack makes a big difference.  The paci that LO was given at the hospital she couldn't keep in.  It kept slipping out, unless we held it for her.    We tried a Nuk paci I was given after shopping at Motherhood.  It is orthotic and shaped flatter with a ridge.  She can hang on to that one much better

We started LO on a paci while still in the hospital for the same reason - if there wasn't a paci in her mouth, her hands went straight there. She likes her paci ok (we didn't use the hospital one, just a standard, old fashioned one) but she doesn't always want it. Maybe pay attention and see when LO is most likely to suck on their hand- are they hungry, sleepy, bored, etc? If you can figure out when they are more likely to want something to suck on, you can have different pacis on hand to let her try them.

My little man is doing the same thing too. Hes 4 months old & at birth he liked the paci at first but after 1 month he would not take it anymore & still will not take it anymore, he prefers his wrists, hands, knuckles or fingers. At first it bothered me but it is very nice in the middle of the night when he does wake up he has his hand to self soothe instead of the need for a paci.

Our baby girl is (was) the exact same way. I would rather her have a paci than to try and wean her off of sucking her wrist/fingers.

She took her paci the first day and it seemed like she loved it. But then after that she just refuses and would spit it out. We taught her out to like it I suppose you could say. After we would finish feeding her-we would subsitite the bottle with the paci. And she would suck on it for quite awhile. After a couple weeks of doing this, she now prefers her paci when she just wants to comfort suck.
