Prenatal Pills = Bigger Babies?

Hello All,

I was informed by my OB that women who take prenatal vitamins every day tend to have bigger babies. She said she wasn't an advocate for vitamins, as long as you eat right. I informed her that I do not have the best eating habits, so she advised me to take prenatal vitamins every other day or so.

Has anyone else heard of this? Any previous moms with experience?

Thanks!

I hadn't heard this. I tried taking my prenatal vitamins but they made me feel barfy. Now I just try to make sure I eat a fairly balanced diet and pray that everything turns out okay.

I am seeing a bunch of never before seen on the bump stuff tonight. All by people with tiny post counts.

If it's true, it's not true every time. I hardly ever remembered to take them with DS1 - DS was 8lbs 13ozs (and I didn't gain a ton of weight with him).

DS2, I still didn't take them the way I should - he was a week early and 8lbs 11ozs.

This one I took them before I got pregnant and for the majority of the first trimester and then I started forgetting, so I would take one on the days I remember. Hopefully I don't end up with a 13lb baby lol!

I have never heard this. Folic acid especially is extremely important especially in the first trimester. I can't imagine that most Americans have a good enough diet that they don't need supplements.

I have never head of this. Infact my OB for my first and this pregnancy has ALWAYS recommended taking vitamins no matter what your eating habits. Prenatals contain a large amount of folic acid that is needed in order to prevent birth defects such as neural tube defect and spinabifida. I have never head of these defects being prevented from a "healthy" diet.

Also, in regards to large babies ... I took them every day with my 1st pregnancy, and my son was 7lbs 3 oz 19.5 inches. So I would say, no I don't think their is truth to it. But if I were you I would do the research for myself. Some dr's are more into "natural" medicine then vitamins, which is fine but I would definatley research and decide for yourself. Because ultimately you are the one who is going to have to live with the outcome.

Here is an article on folic acid:

Folic acid is recommended mostly for the first trimester and prior to conception. We weren't trying to conceive so I certainly wasn't taking it then and all of the foods I craved were mostly things with high folic acid content. Taking something that was going to make me barf them along with all the other contents in my stomach up wasn't an option and fine with my OB.

I figure that women have been doing this for a long long time without taking a bunch of man made stuff. I think it'll be okay.

maybe they weigh less without the vitamins because they're not as healthy. i think your ob is possibly mixing up her opinion with her practice.

lol. Your doctor sounds like a loon.

Is this "air stupid shitt I've heard about pregnancy" day? First the bit about short people having babies early and now this?

OP, I don't mean to sound like turd; it's not your fault. But the suggestion that vitamins cause big babies is silly. And there have been a lot of similarly ridiculous things said around here lately, so don't take my chiding to heart.

Yes, women have been doing this for millenia without "man made stuff". However, all women also used to eat diets consisting entirely of fresh, whole foods. Unless you do the same, it's very unlikely you're getting the vitamins and nutrients you'll need to stay healthy. It's not for the baby, it's for you. The baby will leech what it needs out of your system, there's very rarely a problem with the baby getting enough. However, your health will suffer if you aren't getting what you need. I take a gummy prenatal that doesn't have iron (the reason prenatals make most women throw up), because I know I don't eat enough whole foods. It's cheap ($10/month or so) and worth it. It's certainly not harming anything.

Did they have prenatal vitamins in the old wives' days? Just how old are these old wives, anyway?

Inquiring minds want to know.

WTF?  You need a new OB.  That's just stupid.  Every woman I know with small children took prenatals.  Our children ranged from 5-10lbs.

Well, my DD was born at 41 and 3 and weighed 6 pounds, 13 ounces, so I don't think so. I have always taken vitamins.

I was thinking the same thing...

This is ridiculous, I cant even get into how stupid a doctor would sound saying this.  If my Doctor told me this I'd be asking for my records on the way out the door.

I eat way healthier then the average woman, and my doctor AND my nutritionist both say I need to take them EVERYDAY.

I took prenatals religiously with DS and he was 8 lbs 4 oz. But my friend took hers very seldom and she had an 11 lb baby!! So I doubt its true.
Regardless I think the vitamins are important!!

I have read that unless you eat a mostly (like almost 100%) organic, clean diet (meaning lots of raw, whole grains, NO processed foods), you need to take prenatal vitamins. They provide nutrients that your baby needs to develop. Most americans do NOT have this kind of diet... so I feel it's even slightly irresponsible for your midwife to say she is not an advocate, personally.

An OB i went to a while back told me that eating a lot of carbs can make you have a bigger baby but ive never heard anyone say not to take the vitamins.

At my first appointment, my OB made sure I knew to take PNVs everyday.

I Love my Dave:
why are bigger babies bad?

This is a good  point.

I think most women are scared they will end up having to have a c section if the baby is to large. But its not a very rational fear. My mother is 5'1" and tiny, had 6 completely natural births.  I was 9 lbs, one of my brothers was 11 lbs.

NEVER EVER heard of this! MY OB also would not be a big fan, plus I have a prescription and I take about 6x the normal dosage of things like vitamin B and folic acid. Not getting the correct nutrients can be very harmful to your baby.

And if this were true my daughter would have been a heifer. She came at 39w5d and was a nice 7lb1oz, not big in the least!

Your OB sounds like an idiot.  The first thing my OB did for both my pregnancies was write me a prescription for pre-natals.  Li was born at 39 weeks, 6lbs 9oz... hardly big.
