Describe your contractions

I know that contractions feel different for everyone, but as a FTM I'm curious what they may feel like. Over the past few days I've been experiencing occasional sharp pains in what feels like the lower part of my uterus. A few have stopped me in my tracks. I mentioned it to my midwife today and she didn't seem concerned. I'm not quite convinced that those were contractions.

So please tell me what your contractions feel like for you.

 Thanks!!

For my first pregnancy they felt just like strong menstrual cramps.  That's really the best way I can describe them.  They definitely did not feel like sharp pains to me at least.

This exactly, strong horrible menstrual cramps where I do not relax my body enough to sleep.

i had back labor with my first and the pain was in my lower spine and hips felt nothing in my front. the pain was so bad i was crawling around on all fours and trying to poop (that was baby however) i would try to arch my spine away from my spine (i know sounds weird) to try and escape the pain.

Mine would start in my lower back and then I would get a burning, cramping like menstrual cramps. As I progressed it got to where I was biting the pillow and couldn't talk. God luck!

That sounds like RLP to me.

I can't describe them all I can say is that when it is the real thing, you will not question it. You will know. I keep telling myself this as well. Even though I have done this twice before, sometimes I am not sure. Then I remember that when I was REALLY in labor, I knew!

This was me too.  I had such horrible back labor it literally took my breath away.  I felt like I was suffocating from the pain.

This time around though, my contractions just feel like my belly is getting really hard but they haven't really reached pain-levels yet.

The menstrual cramps are right on.  Plus, when I was having strong(er) contractions, I noticed that I started holding my breath through them, which is not recommended.  My belly would just get so hard that I would stop taking breaths because it felt like I was being squeezed.

I also had back labor, and it really sucked.  Major lower back pain and for me, I also had terrible hip pain on my right side.  I think that's where my DS's head was pressing.  It was miserable.

That sounds like RLP to me.

I agree, a sharp pain would remind me of round ligament pain or maybe even baby giving your cervix a good jab.  That can be mighty uncomfortable.  Around the bump people refer to it as "lightenting crotch".

The other thing about contractions is they'll usually last a minute or so in duration.  Of course they could be shorter than that, but I find that sharp pains usually come and go much more quickly than a contraction would.

I found my contractions were not at all like how other people described theirs- I don't really feel like mine felt like strong menstrual cramps at all, mine were definitely more sharp pain. I remember when I was in intense active labor with my 2nd I turned and told my sister (who was my doula) to specifically remind me that my "real" contractions felt like someone shoving a sharp rod up my vagina and twisting. I don't have the stereotypical tight belly or the feeling that starts in the back and wraps around mine is sharp, feels more like it's in my vagina vs. a lower back cramping (which is what my menstrual cramps feel like). I agree that a sharp pain that is pretty quick is probably not a contraction and when you get to a stage where you are having active labor contractions you will DEFINITELY know.

Early labor contractions for me are more of the stereotypical, belly tightening, crampy feeling, etc. but once real labor hits it is much sharper, I can't sit down, etc. You could be having contractions that are just intense braxton hicks or even real contractions that are just prepping your body. Since this is my 3rd relatively close together I've been contracting a ton this pregnancy- doesnt help that I don't have much down time with a 2 and 1 year old :-) I promise you will absolutely know when real labor starts even if it is a fast labor (my active labor with DD was maybe 2 hours? and I still could tell when things switched from early labor to the real deal). HTH!

FTM here - I had mild cramps for three days, and finally went to the Dr. after I started getting mild back discomfort as well.  Turns out I was having BH contractions!  Not painful at all, but just... crampy.  Then, while I was being monitored, the pain sorta ramped up into "zing-iness".  Again, mostly not painful, but not comfortable.  They lasted for 30 seconds or more, wouldn't really "end", but the feeling would fade away.  I've also had short, stabbing pain (and some "lightning crotch"), but they feel very different.

I never would have guessed that the initial feelings were contractions if I hadn't been hooked up to monitors and the nurses told me.  Towards the end I could understand what the contractions were and how they were different from other random feelings down there.  I completely understand that the real deal will be super obvious, and much more painful, but I'm sorta glad to know my body is practicing.

Mine tighten my whole belly and my lower back. They are not really painful just very uncomfortable. Of course I made it to 7 cm last time before I found them painful so I think I have an okay pain tolerance. They are kind of different for everyone.
