formula mixing

I feel like I have been mixing the powder formula wrong all of a sudden. Do you measure out ounces of water then add powder or the other way around? I have been doing it the first way. At least that is how the directions make it sound.

I dont think it really matters, it all gets mixed up when you shake the bottle anyway. When I supplement my LO with formula I do it the way you do.

You put the water in first.  If you put the powder in first and then pour water, you won't get enough water unless you're subtracting the powder from your calculations.

Did that make sense? I can't decide if it made sense or not.

If you stir it instead of shake it you won't get as many bubbles in it.

It does matter because if you put the powder in first and then put water to the correct ounce, you're not actually getting that much water because of displacement from the powder, kwim?  You need the measurements to be separate so that they're both accurate - water first ensures you are truly getting the amount of water you're intending and then you add the powder that you have measured accurately using the scoop.

It actually does matter...if you measure out water first, then mix in powder, you will see that the amount in the end is actually more. So if you measure out 4 ounces, then add two scoops of formula, you end up with a little more than 4 ounces in the bottle.

Conversely, if you add the formula first, then add water up to the 4-ounce mark, you are adding less water.

I do it the first way because that seems to be what the instructions say to do.

At night, we keep dry bottles with two scoops of power in them in LO's room and add water when he needs a bottle (saving a trip to the kitchen), so I add water until it is a little over the 4-ounce mark to try to approximate what happens when you mix is correctly.

Pour water THEN formula. Its supposed to be that way bc the formula powder can take up space where water should be. If its mixed wrong for an extended period of time (so ive read) baby can start having seizures.

It doesn't matter how you do it if you measure the water before mixing...we use a water pitcher so we have a 1/2 container to put the bottle water in, so it doesnt matter which you put in the bottle first. I generally do the powder first, then the water b/c if I put the powder in last, when I shook it, sometimes so powder got stuck in the top of the nipple and then I had to knock it out and shake the bottle again before she could eat (and LO is NOT patient when she's hungry- she screams every second you are making that bottle!)

Doesn't really matter, except following the instructions does cause less clumping. My enfamil says measure out the warm water, add powder, shake. I usually use room temp, but warm water dissolves the powder better IMO.

Ya. Im confused as to why people say it matters? My enfamil says a 1/2 cup water for 2 scoops of formula. So...why does it make a difference which order I do that in?
