Picky about rhythm

I've found that one of the big things I'm considering about a name is the rhythm of the syllables. My husband has a 3 syllable first name, a 2 syllable middle name, and a 1 syllable last name. The balance and rhythm of his name seem perfect to me, and I'd like to try to match it when we have children.

Anyone else really picky about the rhythm of a name?

I'm not picky because we have a two-syllable last name (I would be pickier if it was shorter or longer).

DH is 2-1-2

I'm - 2-2-2

DS1 - 2-1-2

DS2 - 2-1-2

DD - 2-2-2

It's not something I focused on when naming them, but it is something I noticed when finalizing the name for baby girl, since all of the males have the same rhythm and now the females will as well. It should be noted that none of our names are similar - we all start with different letters and have very separate names.

I have a friend whose daughter has a super long name - about 24 letters from first to last - and she's 3-2-3, but luckily goes by a short nickname :).

It's funny, with #1 I was concerned about rhythm, but the names we chose (partially for family reasons) just both happened to be 2 syllables, as is our last name.  I remember wondering if that was ok at the time.  But, I find that now I actually like the flow of his name better than DS2's.  Our syllable flows are:

DS1-  2-2-2

DS2-  2-1-2

DS3-  3-2-2

DH-  2-1-2

Me-  2-2-2

I do like a name that flows together well, but I feel the number of syllables is less important than the emphasis on those syllables.

For example:

Lily Marie sounds better than Lily Mary even though they are both 2-2.

Good example.  I definitely agree with the flow.  Sometimes it is the syllables, sometimes it is just how it sounds (for lack of a better explanation)

It definitely has to flow and for me it depends on the name together more than rhythm, but I totally know what you mean.

I am totally picky about rhythm! I have a degree in creative writing, and it never got me any jobs, but it's made me a really good baby namer. :)

My partner is 14 weeks pregnant, and we plan to hyphenate our surnames to make a last name for our LO. (I know hyphenated last names are generally despised and considered a burden to the poor child, but we've never been ones who cave to popular opinion!) We're waiting to choose a first and middle name before we decide which one of our surnames will come first, because my last name is 1 syllable and my partner's is 2. We're leaning toward a 3-1-2-1 combo.

I've been slightly obsessed with varying syllables for both kids.  DS and DD will both be 2-3-1.  I don't really care order the syllables come in but find that names sound best (imo) when the syllables vary.

Yes. I especially don't like names that are really choppy or really long. Luckily, in our family, all the names seem to flow well. My sister and I are both 3-1-2. DH is 2-2-2. DS and DD are 1-2-2.

We have a 2 syllable last name. I try to stay away from 2-2-2. I like the flow much better if it's 3-2-2, 2-3-2, or 2-1-2. I'm picky about this too.

Me: 3.2.2
DD: 3.2.2
DH: 1.2.1.2

Even though the syllables are the same, I don't think DD's name flows as well as mine. I do find rhythm interesting though. Also, it turns out, DD's FN, MN and LN each have the same number of letters. That has no real bearing on anything [and it was unintentional] but it's kind of interesting. Actually, I just realized my sister, DD and I all have 3 syllable names with the same number of letters... perhaps I should include those as naming criteria for future children.

This.

DS is a 312 (the name he uses socially is 22)

DH is 212 (the name he uses socially is 12)

I'm 222 (name I use socially is 22)

I also paid attention to how something looked as a signature. DS's FN and MN have the same number of letters (6) despite having different numbers of syllables and our last name is 10 letters long. It just fits on a lot of pre-printed forms.
