Sip & See - just curious

Has anyone actually been invited to a "meet the baby" that was actually, formally, out-right called a "Sip and See"?

Similarly, is this a term that gets thrown-around, "Oh, sorry I can't do lunch but I've got a Sip & See that afternoon."? TB is the only place I have heard the term.

The concept doesn't bother me (though would I intentionally take my baby to an event where everyone will expect to touch/hold her? nope!) but the term just makes my skin crawl.

I have thrown meet the baby parties for both my kids and I call them "meet the baby" parties. Not sip and sees. I also wear the baby during the party, so other people holding her was kept to a very bare minimum.

ETA: We did both meet the baby parties on the same weekend we had the girls named at synagogue. So in our evite for the party, we indicated that it was an open house from 12-4 (or whatever it was) but that at 1:30, we would be making a small speech about what the name meant, how it was chosen, etc.

AngelSmitty: This reminds me of something my college Human Sexuality professor used to say in class. "Sex is between the legs. Gender is between the ears."

I've never heard it IRL either.  And actually - I've never heard of/ been invited to a "formal" meet the baby party either.  The Sunday after DS was born, we told people that if they wanted to meet him - they could come between 12 and 3.  That was it.  No "party".  Just a VERY casual time so that people could meet him.

Every time I hear "sip and see" I think of an old woman holding a teacup that obscures all of her face except her beady eyes, which are peering over the top.  Cracks me up.

I agree with the terminology it's weird. Have been to meet the baby parties they are fun. It is mostly an open house environment. Never been very germaphobic and at the parties there was hand sanitizer scattered all over so we alwaysed used that before even touching the little one.

They were a blast.

Nope, never heard it IRL. I technically had a MTB party, but no one called it that. My mom literally called people and said "Hey, my daughter is finally in town with the baby. Swing by between these hours. I'll have pizza and wine."

Random contribution - These are the two definitions in Urban Dictionary for sip and see:

Haha!  I'm glad you asked this!  I have never seen one IRL- just a few friends that have said, "hey, we're home from the hospital if you want to stop by on Saturday and see baby" type of things.

The phrase makes my skin crawl too!  Right up there with sprinkles....I can't hear the word sprinkle without thinking of someone peeing on a toilet seat.

I think both of these terms were thought up by the person that coined "panties."  I can't even say that word out loud unless it's prefaced by "granny" or "big girl."

Sip and See is a southern tradition/

A type of baby shower where parents invite friends and family over to 'see' the newborn while 'sipping' on a drink, generally tea, coffee, or punch. Small snacks can also be provided.

It can be as casual or formal as the parents desire or plan for.

Estwd2:

" A "coming out" party for a newborn; a party where new (pretentious) parents present a new baby to family & friends where the guests sip beverages, mingle and see (but don't touch) the baby. It's almost a baby shower AFTER the baby is born."

^  That's funny!   :)

I hosted one for my sil a couple of weeks ago because she didn't have a shower and with the holidays etc it just made sense. It wasn't that different from a shower except we all knew the baby's name and there was no big gift opening.

Cynthia used the term on Real Housewives of Atlanta! She asked Nene about a Sip and See for Nene's granddaughter.

Note: I have terrible taste in television. Don't judge...too much! =)

...I did hear it for the first time ever on ATL housewives...but it was actually a few years ago when Phaedra had her baby, she made a big deal of coming down the staircase with the baby and everything, lol.

This is the only time I've ever heard anyone use this term before. I figured it was a southern thing :)

Never heard the term, but in retrospect I guess I threw one for my sister.  She adopted and when the baby was 2 months we had my mom's friends and family over for dessert and champagne.  We let my grandmother who was 96 at the time hold the baby with supervision.  No one was taking her away from her great grandmother.

This.  We have friends from Louisiana, Alabama, and Kentucky and they all have these.

We had "Meet the Baby Parties" for #2 and #3.  It worked out that we just included it in our annual BBQ.  I think on the invite (yep paper invites -  we always send those for the BBQ) it said "BBQ and Meet the Baby Party".  We said the only thing people needed to bring was their own alcohol (which we had to start doing when the group got sooo big - well over 80 people.  A lot of people brought gifts though.  No one asked to hold the babies although we asked a couple of the older ladies to hold them so we could take pics.

Nope.  But then again I only went to one that would qualify as such.  Instead, it was a trainwreck of etiquette don'ts:

-It was for the 3rd child.

-Hosted by the parents

-Same gender child as first 2, eldest only 4 years old so they had all they needed

-Presents were expected but baby already born

-Had to address own envelopes for TY cards.

(I would have skipped this entirely knowing all these facts (except for the last) but it was for a coworker when I was just out of law school and everyone else in the office (female) was going and I didn't want to look like a b*tch if I didn't attend, and at least for me I hadn't gone to the prior showers.  Most of the other ladies there were actually at the earlier ones though, poor things.)
