How long after quitting BC?

Hi ladies, My husband and I are ready to start a family. I quit taking birth control pills in September. We have not exactly been trying (ie. timing etc) but we will probably start soon. How long after quitting birth control did it take for you to get pregnant?

Everyone is different.  The average for a healthy couple doing everything right is 6 months.

For me it was 3 months.

It took me two months for my periods to become regular after stopping the pill. We got pregnant after four months which was sooner than I thought since I was on the pill for MANY years prior! Good luck to you!

Went off the pill but kept preventing. Once we started trying and stopped preventing, about 3 months. And I had been on the pill for over 12 years

It took DH and I 3 months after quitting BC to get our BFP but every women is different. The one thing I know is most women do need time for their cycles to go back to normal after quitting BC. My cycles did not go back to normal right away like they say.

I was on BC for 5 years, but the month I quit I got a BFP. I also had a UTI that month and took some meds that said they would stop my BC from working.

I got pregnant the first month I was off of the pill very much to my surprise. I'd been on the pill for 10 years and thought I'd have a little more time before my cycles normalized.

I went of BCP in the beginning of August after being on various hormonal birth control for 16 years (pill, depo, back to the pill) Got pregnant on our 3rd cycle/ 4th month off the pill, first month trying.

I was charting using FertilityFriend and using OPKs. It was really helpful because my cycles were around 40 days with a 10 day LP. Our timing would have been completely off if we didn't.

I stopped taking my BC at the end of September and got pregnant at the beginning of November.  My doctor told me I could get pregnant as early as 3 days after going off BC.

Thanks all! My cycles are pretty regular and didn't have to wait for my cycles to "normalize" after stopping the pill. I think we're going to try timing it exactly during ovulation and if things don't work, I'm going to see my OB. I'm a little concerned bc my husband was married before and he and his ex had trouble getting pregnant, and never did end up pregnant. She had PCOS though. However, I don't want to waste any time. I'm 31 and if there are any problems, I'd like to know what they are sooner than later and find out our options. I'm considering seeing my OB if it doesn't happen after 6 months...

You're still very young, they don't usually consider seeing someone before a year of trying at that age.  35 and older is when they recommend seeing someone after only 6 months.  They MIGHT consider it after 6 months if you're actively charting, not just 'timing for ovulation'.  Get an account with Fertility Friend, start temping, checking cm, and testing with OPKs to help pinpoint your ovulation time.  If you can show how much you know about your cycles and have the charts to back it up, you might be considered for fertility testing earlier than one year.

ETA  I stopped BCP in August, got my BFP in December.

Well, every person is different, but this is my experience:  I stopped taking BCP in June 2012 after taking them almost 9 years.  My periods were regular after about 3 months.  We did not try to conceive until December 2012... and it worked on the first try!  ( I started temping back in June also).

Good luck!

My DH may have had some issues trying to have a baby in his past marriage. I dont' want to single him out as the factor....it could be one, both of us, or neither of us and just timing/chance.

Perhaps if we both see our docs it will help provide some level of support. I don't konw. I just don't want to let too much time go by when I know that there is the possibility that he (and/or I) may have some issues.

With my daughter, we conceived the 2nd month off BCP (1st month trying).

With this pregnancy, we conceived the 7th month off BCP (6th month trying).

So yes, everyone and every pregnancy is different.  I would highly recommend charting your temperature with fertilityfriend.com.  I learned a lot the second time around about my cycles.  It turns out that we just got extremely lucky the first time.

After I came off (after 10+ years) we prevented for 1 cycle which regulated much faster than I'd hoped.  Once we stopped preventing it took us 4 cycles.

It can take a perfectly healthy couple with good timing up to a year to get pregnant.  The recommendations are to try for 1 year if you are under 35, 6 months if you are over 35.  I would suggest watching The Great Sperm Race on youtube.  Just because you don't get pregnant instantly doesn't mean there is anything wrong with either of you.
