S+TMs: Talk to me about membrane stripping

I had (another) growth ultrasound today with one OB in the practice that I genuinely love. He mentioned that the baby is in the 90th percentile, and I also love that when he mentioned the weight, he said, "This could be 10% either way. 10% smaller, or 10% bigger. It's not exact."

So, he started talking about what to expect in the next couple of appointments, and then said that if I am okay with it (LOVE!) that they can try to strip the membranes to get labor started at 39 weeks. He didn't mention a c-section like the other 2 OBs, so I should make sure that my next few appointments are with him ;)

I didn't have membranes stripped with DS and I don't know anyone IRL who has had it done. I've Googled it and I know that it can be uncomfortable but not painful, but for those that have had it done, did it work for you?

ETA: clarification

I had my membranes stripped last time, but I was farther along (like 39.5 weeks). It did nothing for me, personally. I would probably not do it at 36w, because growth ultrasounds can be way off, and the baby could still need time to grow. I think it's worth a shot closer to the end of your pregnancy (and I plan on trying it again this time), assuming you are dilated 1cm at least (they can't do it if you are completely closed).

I had it done with number 1 and immediately started having contractions. Had him less than 24 hours later. That was at 39w3d.

I had it done at my appt yesterday (38 weeks exactly), felt crampy and had irregular contractions all day, then nothing. About 24 hours later, I don't think it worked. Just as an FYI, I am currently 2 cm dilated and 60% effaced, and baby is low (-1 station).

As far as how it felt, I remember the first time it being painful. Maybe because I knew more of what to expect this time, but it didn't seem as painful but still extremely uncomfortable. And I felt uncomfortable down there for the rest of the day. I also bled a lot (OB said this isn't unusual), but I don't remember that from the first time, so I just thought I would warn you because it kind of surprised me this time!

The first time I had it done 3 or 4 times and nothing happened at all. I just got it done yesterday and I lost more of my plug and have been really crampy on and off but so far nothing has happened such as labor!

I'm happy that this time around there is something going on compared to the first time!

He's not talking about doing this until 39+ weeks. If he did, I'd tell him to eff off.

lol, okay. Like I said, I think it's worth a shot. If it starts labor, it's better than being induced. I tried to get them stripped again at 40w2d, but my appt was with the NP and she said she was having a hard time stripping them for whatever reason. I DID go into labor the next morning so maybe she did a better job than she thought, or maybe it was just a big coincidence. I will say after that appt I hurt like hell, I think because she was poking around there too much trying to strip them since I was only like 1.5cm or so.

I had mine stripped at 39w 2d. It was uncomfortable when she did it.

OB stripped my membranes on Friday. I felt awful all weekend. I woke up Monday feeling better. My water broke a few hours later and DS was born on Tuesday, the day before his due date.

I had mine stripped twice with DS at 39 and 40 weeks and once with DD at 39 weeks.  I ended up being induced with both kids after 40 weeks, so it did nothing for me.  It was worth a shot, though.  It was uncomfortable, but not terrible.

I had it done with DS at 41 weeks, 1 day.  I went into labor that night, which may have been coincidence.  It really did not hurt.  It was slightly uncomfortable but no worse than an internal exam for me.  I'm having it done tomorrow, fingers crossed but trying not to get my hopes up :)

I just had mine done yesterday. For my first DS I went into labor naturally at 38 weeks. Yesterday I was 38 weeks 3 days and 4/5 cm dilated and 80 effaced. I felt crampy for a little while yesterday and have had a lot of bloody mucus discharge sorry TMi but no contractions at all today. I've walked 34 miles the last two days, bounced on my ball and basically took advantage of my husband last night an still nothing. We'll see. But I'm not feeling positive.

I had mine stripped at every appt from 38 weeks to 41 weeks. It did nothing but cause me super discomfort.

I wouldn't have it done unless you are over due and looking at induction.  Sometimes they can accidently  break your water and would put you on a timer for having your baby which can lead to unnecessary interventions.  Also, any time you do internal type checks it could introduce unnecessary bacteria.

I heard most of the time they don't do anything, so not worth the chance of them breaking my water.
