Any Crossfit Mommies out there???

HI!!!

I have been doing crossfit for almost a year. I use to be so competitive and getting stronger every week. Now that I am pregnant I am scared because I do not want to do anything to hurt my baby. I am 14 weeks and would love some insight from other mommies. What did you scale your weight down to  for lifting?  Did you continue to do push ups?  I am mainly concerned of the weight I am lifting and would like to know how much to scale.  I am not use to modifying so it seems like I am not getting anything out of my work out. Any advise would help. thank you!

I haven't done CrossFit, but I used to work out 6 days a week pretty intensely. I would ask your OB about CrossFit specifically. I would think it would be alright at a modified level, BUT you have to get used to the fact that you're not going to feel like you're getting stronger for a while. Generally, pregnancy isn't seen as a time to stress your body in new ways. It's busy growing and supporting another life.

I wasn't doing crossfit but I was working out pretty intensely with a trainer a few days a week. My OB had me stop as soon as I was pregnant because I am RH negative and if I had any bleeding I would have needed to get the Rhogam shot earlier. She also told me not to lift more than 10 lbs. I stopoped working out all together out of paranoia, but I still walk and I do a lot around the house. I would just ask your OB what he or she recommends as it's normal and healthy to continue to exercise during pregnant---I'm just not sure how wise it is to be doing power-cleans when you're pregnant.

I don't do crossfit but I work out pretty intensely and I haven't stopped.  I recently have lowered my squat weight from 60 to 30.  It just felt weird squating that much so I modified. I also had to modify my burpies because I get dizzy if I come up too quickly.

I would just talk to your doctor and your instructor.  My Dr said I can keep doing my usual regime but to listen to my body. My instructors have been great and given me modifications in case I need them.

I am 20 weeks pregnant with twins and crossfit 45 times per week. I did crossfit 2.5 years before getting pregnant so I had a great foundation to work from and actually did a competition my first trimester. First and foremost talk to your coaches about scaling what and when. Secondly and perhaps most importantly listen to your body. There is no set number to scale to..some days you will feel great and strong and others you will be exhausted from a 5 min AMRAP. If you think you should scale that most likely means you should so do it. Find what is comfortable for you as pregnancy is not the time to push yourself and try to do a 1RM or beat a previous time on a wod. Everyone is different and what works for you may or may not work for someone else. Utilize your coaches as they are a wealth of information and take care of yourself take breaks, drink water, etc. There will always be a competitive side to crossfit after your baby arrives. Best of luck to you!

I used to do Crossfit before I was pregnant. I stopped just because I was concerned with the lifting. I asked my Dr. about it and she said that I shouldn't lift more than 10lbs. I still do it some, but am still concerned with doing all that I used to do.

Unless you've been considered high risk, stopping your activity would be a detriment. Besides the physical benefits, it can help alleviate some stress during pregnancy. Just keep doing what you're doing and as you did before, listen to your body. Remember if you are obscenely out of breath, so is your baby. Your perceived exertion, intensity, and breathing rate is a fairly reasonable indictator of how Junior is doing too. With already being fit, I"m sure your perceived exertion is pretty high...as in you can take a lot.

Do your push-ups...just lower as low as your belly allows. Today, in fact, I did push-ups and just went as low until my belly touched the floor. You could also do them on an incline so you have some more space to move that belly through. :)

Don't fret too much on the amount of weight you are lifting but now is not the time to shoot for any PRs! Now is the time to maintain your fitness and keep your core strong for labor/birth. Your baby is well-insulated and cushioned inside you. It would take quite a large exertion to hurt something.

You can get your heart rate fairly high since you're already fit. I taught kickboxing until 32 weeks with my first pregnancy. It wasn't until my heart rate got around 165-170 that I actually felt "out of breath". At that point then, I'd back off and just make sure I didn't overheat myself.

Good luck and keep lifting those weights! Big Smile

Sorry....I should have posted some credentials if it matters at all....?! Just so it doesn't sound like I'm blowing hot air! I'm a certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor and have been training people since 1997. I have a BS degree in Exercise Phys too.

Again, good luck! You'll be fine! Yes

I was told to keep doing what I'm doing as long as i feel good. I lift 3x per week, and while i haven't deceased in weight too much I'm definitely not making forward progress, either, and I'm obviously ok with that. I run the other 3 days and I'm still doing double digit runs on Saturdays. I would just listen to your body and scale down as needed. FWIW, pushups have been the most challenging for me, as have other body resistance exercises, because of the added weight.

There is a CrossFit Moms webpage where they breakdown the CrossFit workouts for you by trimester and also level.  I would also discuss your workout plans with your doctor to get his/her opinion, as well as with your trainer.  If no one at CrossFit is certified to work with a pregnant client, you can research prenatal trainers in your area and they specialize in the correct modifications for your stage in pregnancy.
