XP: STM's +: Stocking up on diapers

I would like to reduce the financial "hit" as much as possible after the birth of our son and want to start purchasing disposable diapers now in a variety of sizes, brands. Did anyone do this with previous children? How many of each size did you/are you purchasing? I am only purchasing size 1, 2, and 3's right now (staying away from newborn sizes as our hospital will provide a box for us to take home-if he's even that small!). Did you spread out amongst brands or choose one brand/type to stay with? Just want to make sure I do this as intelligently as possible during the next 10 weeks!

The best advice I've heard about this is to buy gift cards to use for diapers instead of actual diapers. You never know which brands will fit the best, if your child will have sensitivity to certain brands or how long your child will wear a particular size. Plus you won't have to store tons of diapers!

Diapers are the one thing I didn't stock up on right away. Wipes, yes, but diapers, everyone had so many opinions on what was "best" or that they preferred, that I wanted to see what happened with DS first. For one thing, your baby could have a reaction to one brand, but not another. It's SO EASY to find diapers at a local store or even online (with next day delivery, thank you Amazon Prime!), that it wasn't worth stocking up ahead of time. Once you know the brand/size that works for you, you can start stocking up and buying in bulk. But I'd recommend waiting until you know for sure. Otherwise, you'll just waste money on brands you can't or don't want to use.

No, I didn't. We bought 3-4 small packs of different brand diapers and realized we hated 2 of them, 1 was okay, and the other worked well. It would have sucked to stock up on the ones that sucked, you know? I wouldn't do that until you are set on a particular diaper.

We are doing cloth diapers, but the "stocking up" process is fairly similar to disposables--- we have a few from each brand and a variety of types that we'd like to try to see what works best for our LO.

I stocked up a little with DS. I really loved the Pampers Swaddlers newborn and size ones. I also had a package of Huggies Pure & Natural and hated them. I also had Target and Wal-Mart generic diapers, both of which I was not a fan of.

I liked Huggies Little Snugglers, and then moved on to Huggies Little Movers. DS was in those until I tried Luvs to save money, and he does well with those also. (I know a lot of people that hate Luvs--- I personally have never had a problem)

My vote for disposables newborn and size 1 diapers goes to Pampers Swaddlers, hands down. I think we had roughly 4-5 packages of those in NB and Size 1 and they lasted a long time before we ever had to buy diapers.

ETA: The gift card idea is so much better than stocking up on diapers. I wish I would've done that with DS.

This.   Makes way more sense.  Just have a few newborn and size 1's handy for when you first get home.

I do agree with all of this BUT I have stocked up on diapers already lol. I am a couponer so have been buying diapers when they've been on sale or I've found a good deal. I've got a variety of sizes and brands. I'm hoping that if my LO has a sensitivity to anything, I can return them to Walmart or Target without a problem or donate them to a shelter.

The gift card idea is good.  I had one box of 1s and a few of the other packages in a different brand.  I didn't buy any newborn because DS came home from the hospital in 1s.  DD could wear NB and I just went out and bought a box before we ran out of the ones from the hospital.  We're doing CDs once she's big enough to fit in the OS dipes.

I just want to say thanks for putting this out there. There are so many Moms in tough situations and passing forward things that might not work out for you, can be a major blessing to someone else. A local church might have a shelter or help-program that they work with!

Yes  I agree. You never know how fast your DC will go through a size of diapers. Or you might try one brand and find it doesn't fit as well as another.

I wouldn't stock up personally. My first broke out from anything but pampers, my second couldn't wear pampers because they didn't fit her right and they didn't hold everything in. It's better to wait and see what works for your baby. Most people I know who stocked up ended up not using most of what they bought.

Both my boys were sensitive and only could wear pampers swaddlers the first 6 mths. So for this baby I am just buying 2 big boxes of newborn and 2 of size 1s to get me through a few weeks of not having to buy any :) especially since I'm still buying them for my 2 yr old...

I was just thinking about this over the weekend. I plan to stock a little bit, when I find a sale and coupons. With DD, she was allergic to everything I tried Except for Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers. I plan to get a small pack of Newborn, and a big pack of size 1, maybe 2's also with coupons as I find them. I am also going to tape the receipt to the pack, just in case we have an allergy or size issue, to hopefully make returning easier. I am definitely starting with wipes now. I think the gift card idea is a really great idea!

This. I am a couponer and over the last 6 months have stock piled on diapers when the cost was less than 2 a jumbo pack. I have a certain goal for each size based on my own crazyness. Using average growth charts, height weight of diaper and information I found helpful from a coupon blog I saw years ago both our families tend to run smaller than average , But even if I am over a pack or two I still saved a ton of money in the log run, and if a certain brand won't work I can exchange, donate or gift to another new mom. I did this with both my sisters and neither of them had a problem with any of the diapers. They had some the preferred over others but they said it was nbd to use a different type/brand.

We were gifted a ton of diapers in different brands last time and I actually liked that we had so many to try out. We didn't buy diapers for close to two months and it gave us a better idea of what worked for DD.

For this LO, we have purchased one pack of NB and one pack of size 1. We may buy a few more, I haven't really decided. It's super easy to run out and pick up diapers so I don't see it as a top priority right now.

I never really understood the logic of stocking up on diapers.

First off, from my own experience, I have never seen a price change/great deal on diapers that didn't kind of pop up fairly periodically, negating any benefit from buying a bunch at once.

Second, you never know how long your kid will be in any particular size.  So you might need to keep buying one size and then end up with a half pack of another because your kid then grew quickly past that size.  (Friend gave me a whole pack of fours recently because of this.)

Third, kids have different sensitivities.  I tried clothe diapering but DD always got a rash from it (when it wasn't leaking when she was too small.)  She's had no problems with any store brand or name brand diaper (incl. Walmart, Target, Huggies, & Pampers) but other kids I know have a sensitivity to one brand or another. You buy a bunch and your kid is allergic, now what?

I'd just stock up on the newborn size and size one and play it by ear.  There's no diaper shortage and I highly recommend using Diapers.com so you can even order online & get them in a day or two without leaving the house.  (Slightly more expensive than the store brands (target etc.) but they accept coupons and often have discounts and promos that make them just as cheap and without the hassle.  So no need to stock up.
