Finding a Pediatrician?

Hi ladies! I had my 28 week appt today (and Rhogam shot).  The doctor suggested I start looking for pediatricians and she gave me a couple recommendations.

What do I even ask when I "interview" them?  It seems kind of awkard to make an appt just to meet with them but I guess that is standard protocol.  Any tips?

I got a list of recommended pediatricians from my OB-GYN and I happened to know and trust one of them on the list so deciding was pretty easy.

You should ask them about their vaccine schedule (if you want to alter it in any way) and just sort of get a feel for the practice.  Our pedi is on call 24/7 for infants - if I need help at 3 am I can leave a message with the answering service and they get in touch with him.  He's a GP so he can treat people of all ages, but with his infant patients he personally takes calls.

Because he's a GP, and he's a younger guy, we won't have to switch doctors when Olivia gets older - my pedi retired when I was 8 and I ended up going to a GP after that.

I got a recommendation from one of my coworkers (who happened to be one of my best friends). The office is right downstairs from my OBGYN, so very convenient, and they are associated with the hospital, so they will be visiting my baby every day while we're there.

I did make an appointment to talk to one of the doctors (there are about 10 in the office). She will be my main ped, but they cover for each other if mine is not available. The office is open 7 days a week, and even holidays.

my main reason for actually going in is that I felt like I learned a lot about how the office works. They had a "well" waiting room as well as a "sick" waiting room. The offices themselves were very cozy, and the exam rooms were brightly colored and decorated for the holidays. It was nice to see it so family friendly.

I actually didn't interview pedis with DS. His pedi is through Children's hospital, and they have primary care offices that I took DS to for his wellness checks as an infant; I never had any problems, though he never truly saw the same pedi twice, and still doesn't if he needs to go. However, we were on a delayed schedule for certain vaccines, and no one ever gave me grief about it.

With this LO, I'd like to find a pedi office that I can get to know throughout his life, so I'll probably do looking for reviews for offices that are on the recommendation list, or that are in-network for my insurance. I'll also ask around to friends with kids and see if they have been/know anything about particular pedis that I may be interested in. I do feel weird interviewing a doctor, so I probably won't be doing that.

I never interviewed DS's pediatrician. She was highly recommended by my SIL and some other moms that I know. I did ask her about the vaccine schedule over the phone before I made DS's first appointment, but that was the only thing I wanted to know.

If you're planning to breastfeed ask if they have any lactation consultants on staff (IBCLC) and also if they used the modified growth chart recommended by WHO for breastfed babies. I noticed there was a pediatrician's office down the hall from my 1st OB and went on their website. I loved everything I saw on there, extended hours, breastfeeding support, vaccine information, to dealing with temper tantrums. Just an amazing online resource. And they had a prenatal "class" where you could come and meet 1 of the 19 doctors and 4 NPs and tour the office and ask questions. I fell in love immediately and hope that we made the right choice once DD gets here.

Most pediatrician offices have a meet and greet appt you can make to talk with the doc and you probably won't have to have a list of questions-they will give you more information than you would have thought to ask. Just getting a feel for the office staff and the doc's general demeanor will point you in the right direction.
