Cycling and the Flu shot

Are any of you currently cycling and considering getting the flu shot? What has your RE told you about it?

Mine suggested getting it now because it's better now than while pregnant, but didn't elaborate. Curious if anyone else has asked their REs about it for them?

For some reason it's making me nervous to get it so close to ET, I can't seem to shake the crazy idea that it could cause problems for the ET! I'm getting over a nasty cold so I can't get it until Saturday at the earliest putting me at just shy of three weeks prior to ET. Someone convince me I'm crazy and just need to get it and not worry please. :)

My office suggested it to me too. I've never gotten it before, but I've also never had the flu before. I've tried to get it twice already, but both times, both pharmacies were out at the time. I'm nervous to get it too, because it close to ET, because I've never had the flu before, and I'm not sure what it could do to me... I'm in the same boat, I just don't know what to do. Sorry I'm no help, lol.

I got the preservative free flu shot in September before my October DE cycle. I would get it if you can. People "complain" the shot didn't work or made them sick but what is really happening is that the shot takes 2-3 weeks for you to become immune to the the flu strain. It isn't immediate. So if you get sick between the time of the shot and 2-3 weeks, you caught something before you were immune. It might be a different strain of the flu as well and the flu shot was never going to stop that.

I got it last cycle when we were just doing medicated + TI and I got it a few days shy of ovulation, I was worried about getting it in the 2ww.

Ask your RE about it, but my guess is they'll say the risks associated with having a bad reaction to it are much less than the risk of not getting it, and then getting the flu while pregnant which could cause serious issues.

Yes I forgot to mention - ask for the preservative free one. That's the one they recommend for pregnant women. You may have to call around to a few places to find a pharmacy that has that one, they don't all carry it. The CVS near me didn't have it but Walgreens did.

I only had once in my life the "real" flu and it was so horrible that I swore to take the shot every year after that. I took it 4 weeks ago and my ET is friday.

It was on my check list for my first IVF cycle in December. My RE would rather have you get it than not, but if you were adiment about not getting it they would let you skip it. You did have to have it done at least two weeks before ER.

I had my flu shot while stimming right before my ER. I figured with all the shots already, what's another one! My doc knew we were doing Ivf and I told the RE after and he was fine with. I felt better getting it then rather than while i was pg. maybe make sure it isn't the live virus so you don't feel sick a few days which may cause issues with a retrieval. That is just my personal story. Gl!

Hi Liz,

I would suggest you get it.  You REALLY don't want to get the flu after ET, so it's best to safe guard against it now.

I bought a groupon for the flu shot a couple of months ago for only 8 bucks at an urgent care clinic up the street. The good news is that they have the preservative-free flu shot in stock AND my groupon will work for it. Score! Guess it's a sign, I gotta do it. :) Thanks for the pep talk and info, ladies!

3 weeks sounds like plenty of time to get all the kinks worked out if there is a problem. Which there wont be. I took mine a few months back when I was about a week or so prior to ET. My RE says no problem with getting it, you have to have it if you get knocked up so might as well do it now. Good luck!

I was able to get the flu shot back in October, I work in a hospital and it is pretty much required.  If your doctor suggested it and it's still early enough before your ET  I would run out and get it.  So many people are very sick with the flu right now, it would be awful to get sick again after ET.

I cycled in Oct/Nov, and got the shot in early Oct -- I think I was just on BCP at the time.  My RE recommended it.

I'm guessing if it was a problem to get it close to ET, your RE would probably not have suggested it.

I thought it was funny too, but I don't have insurance coverage for it even though its only like $25. I figured 8 bucks was better than 25 so I got it! :) Maybe one of these days there will be a groupon for fertility treatments? 65% off of a cycle? Sign me up!

The only live virus is in the nasal vaccine, not the shot. I got mine in October too in the 2ww.

TTC since 3/2011 Adenomyosis, LPD, hypothyroidism.
BFP on 7/20/12 after 4 cycles 50mg Clomid + IUI
2 large subchorionic hematomas & no heartbeat at 7w6d D&E 8/18/12
Sonohysterography found septum and necrotic tissue. Hysteroscopy to remove both 10/5
IUI #5-7 50mg Clomid + trigger = BFN
IUI #8 Femara + Bravelle + HCG + Progesterone = BFP 3/27/13
Beta 1 (13dpo) = 169 Beta 2 (17dpo) = 1073
No heartbeat at 9w3d. D & E 5/10/13

I just sucked it up and got home from getting it. I'll laugh if I get the flu this year.... (I know it wouldn't be from the actual vaccine).

6/20/12 - ER = 20 Retrieved, 18 mature, 15 fertilized w/ICSI
6/25/12 - ET - One beautiful blast transferred. 9 to freeze
7/9/12 - Beta #1 = 450, 7/11/12 - Beta #2 = 350, 7/13/12 - Beta #3 = 198-chemical pregnancy
8/23/12 - Hysteroscopic Surgery scheduled - Adhesion removed.
9/2/12 - FET Cycle #1 - tfr'ed 2 5 day blasts, 1 hatching
10/5/12 - ET
10/10/12 - + HPT FX for a sticky baby!
11/2/12 - 2nd U/S - 1 ges sac, 2 beautiful babies 2 beautiful heart rates = 125!!
11/15/12 - 8 weeks, no heart beats
11/16/12 - D&E - Chromosome testing showed 2 normal females
12/17/12 - Embryos biopsied and sent for PGS and re-frozen.
12/26/12 - PGS results: 3 abnormal male embryos, 4 normal embryos remaining.
1/6/13 - Lupron start for FET #2.
1/17/13 - Baseline - Cyst delayed us by a week.
1/25/13 - Baseline #2
2/7/13 - Lining Check
2/13/13 - FET #2 - tfr'ed 2 5 day blasts
2/18/13 - BFP! +HPT, Please, Please stick little one(s)
2/26/13 - Beta #1 = 1361!! keep sticking little one!
2/28/13 - Beta #2 = 2787!! Thanks Be To GOD!!
3/2/13 - Beta #3 = 4959! What a little miracle we have!

Me 31, DH 32 TTC summer 2008 Diagnose me. DOR, DH perfect IUI # 1 6/2010, BFN IUI # 2 8/2010, BFN IVF # 1 10/2010 Canceled poor response IVF 1.2 12/2010 BFP! mc 6 weeks 2 days Mental health break for 10 months IVF # 2 10/2011 BFN IVF # 3 5/2012 BFP! 10 eggs retrieved (best ever) 7 fertilized transferred 3 Beta #1 14dpo - 72, Beta #2 17dpo 145 Beta 3 20dpo 521 First u/s June 15 saw HB 126 bpm missed m/c 7/5/12 10 weeks D&C 7/6/12 IVF#4 ER 9/30 ET 10/3 Beta 10/16 BFFN. IVF #5 final with o/e. ER 1/21 only 1 retrieved, hoping my lonestar is the one. Beta #1 2/6/13 = 209.... please let this be it! Keep growing lonestar! Beta #2 2/8/13 - 586! , Beta #3 2/10/13 = 1898. First u/s perfect little heart beat at 116 bpm. Measure 6 weeks 1 day. EDD 10/14/13 3/4/13 measuring right on track beautiful heartbeat 171 bpm, graduated from RE to OB... bittersweet. PAIF/SAIF always welcome!

8/1/12 - IVF #1 - Zero response from max stims (600iu intramuscularly)
My ovaries seem to be just for decoration

12/6/12 - Adopted five embryos that had been frozen for over ten years!
2/11/13 - Thawed four, sadly two didn't survive. Transferred two beautiful blasts.

2/16/13 - First BFP of my life!
3/27/13 - No heartbeat at 9w0d. D&C the following day.

4/23/13 - Matched to adopt five new embryos!
