Diapers

I have read that one way to prepare is to buy 1 pack of diapers a week until your baby arrives. A lot of friends say dont buy many newborn sizes because they won't wear them long. This is my first child so I don't know how many packs is not too many. Can someone give me a good estimate on how many packs of each size I will need?

I bought 1 BJ's size box of 1's, 2 boxes of 2's and 2 boxes's of 3's. I was fine with the ones and I may have bought 1or 2more boxes of 2's. can't remember. But I thought it was a good idea to buy them when I was working and had that extra income. I may have bought more but space was an issue for us.

My last 2 babies never used the newborn size. I would buy a couple boxes of 1s, and I know all of my kids were in 2s forever.

I actually think this is potentially more trouble than it's worth.  Some diapers don't work on some kids for fit reasons or rash reactions.  When you're trying to figure out life with a newborn, the last thing you want to do is have to run store to store trying to exchange diapers.  If money is the issue, put money every week on a gift card at a store you'd shop at like Walmart or Target.  It's really the same thing but doesn't saddle you with actual diapers that may not be any use to you.

Id say a better idea would be to put money aside each week for diapers. Because there's no telling how much your baby will weigh and how fast he or she will grow. Baby may skip newborn altogether or baby may stay in newborn for a month..

I believe that my LO who weighed 7 lbs at birth wore about 3 packs of newborn diapers.

Yes

I think it can be hard to predict how long they'll be in a certain size. Also, we found that certain brands did not work at all for us. We loved Pampers Swaddlers but had to give away a whole box of Huggies because he leaked everywhere in them. I've heard the opposite from other people, so I think it's hard to know what brands you'll like ahead of time.

Ditto PPs- it's very hard to know what size and brand you're going to need until LO gets here.  Some babies are allergic to certain brands or you'll find some are just "leaky" on your kid- you'll need to wait and see.

Also, diapers get funky if they sit around too long.  The get kind of stiff and don't absorb as well, so you don't want to buy a ton of diapers now that are going to sit around for a year and leak when you use them.

I would try to just save money for now and as you see great sales on gear, furniture, etc. buy that stuff early on.  Closer to you EDD, pick up one or two small packs of NB and size 1 diapers.  Most hospitals will also send you home with a few days worth of diapers- if you like what you have, order some more on diapers.com and you'll have them on your doorstep in a day or two, if not, try something else until you find what works.  And don't stock up too much in the smaller sizes (<3), if they go through a growth spurt, you'll be left with a bunch of too small diapers.

This.

We were gifted quite a few boxes of diapers, and the only ones that worked were the pampers swaddlers. Most of the boxes, huggies primarily, we gave away because we couldnt use them.

I definitely agree with waiting if you are using sposies. DS would always leak with Pampers brand, we only used Huggies on him.

For this LO we are CD'ing and are hoping to get most of them at consignment sales in a variety of sizes/types. So as I see ones that are of good quality and price I'm buying them. If something doesn't work out with them we can always re-sell them later. In our area there is a huge market for CD's.

1 pack a week is a LOT and pretty unnecessary. You really should just wait until the baby comes, you never know how long a baby is going to be in each size of diaper.

This. I used cloth with my DD but used disposable when traveling... Some caused her to get rashes so I'd wait.

I am big into couponing and am just TTC, however have been collecting a diaper stockpile.  I know that I may not be able to use some of them for one reason or another, but I'm 27 and most of my friends are either getting married or TTC, so I can always gift them if need be.  Also, a lot of stores are good about allowing you to exchange sizes/brands if needed.

I obviously have more time to stockpile than you since I am TTC, however my "buy" price is when I can find diapers for .10/diaper (only usually find this for size 1's based on # of diapers in pack), at this point, I wouldn't pay more than .15/diaper even for the larger sizes.  You might have to adjust your price point based on time constraints.

I have found 2 "diaper stockpiling" charts that have proven helpful to me.  They are different, so I'm aiming for a median number between the 2.

lurking from 3rd tri...I have quite a stockpile as well b/c I'm a couponer so I'll buy whatever brand when I find a really good deal. If my LO isn't able to buy a certain brand, I'll exchange them or gift them to a shelter.

If you really want to start planning now though, I'd recommend joining swagbucks. It's an online search engine (among other things) where you search the web, take survey's, etc and get virtual bucks that you trade in for giftcards.

Combine amazon gift cards with their subscribe and save and free shipping and you get cheapo diapers shipped to your door. You can sign up and start doing it now and bank quite a few $$ in gift cards before the baby arrives. Between couponing and swagbucks, I spend very little on diapers each month.

PM me if you want more info - I have a tutorial I typed up!

I too used to coupon and have a small stockpile.  I had always aimed to buy when diapers were .13 or less.  I've never found .10 or less!  I gotta get back into it!

.10/diaper comes along every few months or so. It usually happens when there is a good coupon out, plue an in-store sale/promo. For instance, CVS has a spend $30, get $10 deal going on right now that includes Huggies & Luvs, with coupons, that actually puts in less than .10/diaper depending on what coupons you have and what sizes/brand you buy.
