Injection class?

umm... so i thought that it was just to review all medications, but my DH has to attend.  then i read that some do "water" shots so DH's can practice?  anyone want to share what happened at their class because i was TOTALLY unprepared for this!  plus, i don't know if i should tell my hubby or let him find out tomorrow he'll be sticking me if this is the case. dammit.

Me (37) DH (39); Finally correctly diagnosed with DOR in 2012; Started TTC 2009; RE 2009/2010- RE cycle #1 clomid+ ovidrel + TI = BFN; RE cycle #2 clomid + ovidrel + TI=BFN; RE cycle #3 femara + ovidrel + IUI= BFN; RE cycle #4 75iu follistim + ovidrel + IUI= BFN; RE cycle #5 150iu follistim + ovidrel + IUI = BFN ; Took a break and had Weight loss surgery in 2011, back to new RE in 2012 ; AMH 0.43 IVF #1 /ICSI and AH; MDL protocol - ER 2/11 5R, 3M, 2F Three day transfer of 8 cell grade 3 and 8 cell grade 2 embryos. Ive been through two different classes at two different clinics. Both showed how to disinfect, use syringes, needles, measure, etc. They showed us how to draw up with one needle, then change the needle for the actual injection. We never actually did a water injection or an injection on me whatsoever.

If you are getting PIO (progesterone in oil) then you definitely will want DH there paying attention because he probably should be the one to give them to you. I understand it can be very tricky to do those on yourself. All of the other injectibles you should be able to do without his help, although it doesn't hurt to have him pay attention to EVERYTHING in case you question anything later. Take notes if you're worried, and ask anything and everything you need to in order to feel confident. There is no such thing as a dumb question in this class! :)

Between the class and online instructional videos, you'll be fine - I promise. It's SO much more intimidating and scary than it is in practice. Good luck!

We injected tissues and model bellies...no extra shots for me! DH definitely needs to attend to learn how to give PIO intramuscular shots. It would be very hard for you to do those yourself.

thanks ladies! i'm hopeful that we give them on fake bottoms and not mine.  i let him give me an ovidrel injection one time in my thigh and it didn't go so well, so i'm a bit nervous about the pio's and hog that he'll have to do.  :)  one of my best friends is a nurse who also went through ivf and lives only a few minutes away so worse case scenario, i should be covered lol.

not worried at all about the lupron and follistim, but the menopur has me a little nervous because i heard it burns.

do you ladies do it in your thigh or stomach?

I did menopur, the max dose my RE allowed (I think it was 450iu) and it really didn't burn at all. I found the mixing more obnoxious than the actual injection - easy, just tedious. Just go slow on the injection and you'll do great. I did it in my stomach.

The only water involved was in the medication bottles so we could practice drawing the needles and then we would inject the water into the air to get a feel for what it was like. Also, there was a round flesh like half ball, (lol), that we could stick the needles into to see what it could be like to put the needle into the skin. But, no injections or needles were actually given to/on me.

J&D2007:
I've never heard that anyone had to get an actual injection at the class, but I could be mistaken. They just showed us how to mix it, draw it up, etc..

We did actual injections. I gave myself about a quarter cc of the sodium water (what you'll be mixing your meds with) in my belly in front of the nurse, and hubby did the same in my upper butt with the long-ass IM needle. We all had to do it in front of the nurse. The big surprise to me, after hearing that the IM shots go in the butt was finding out that they really don't...they go in what I consider to be my lower back area. After two IVF cycles, I'm pretty used to the sub-q shots, which I only give myself in the belly, and I don't find that Menopur burns. The IM shots (PIO),  however, flat out suck, IMHO. Just take good notes. Good luck. :)
