Caffiene

I'm thinking about giving up caffeine. I don't drink a lot (usually 20oz diet coke a day) but I'm wondering it it's effecting DD. She is EBF and not really napping all that well. She'll nap for (almost always) exactly 20 minutes and then wake up; no matter where she is (in my arms, in her RNP, swing, etc). Then she's awake for 5-15minutes and falls back asleep. Could caffeine be bothering her? How long will it take to clear out of my system? I'm dreading this....

How old is your baby? It could be the 4 month wakeful (My LO hit it at 3 months though!).

I don't think 1 20 oz diet coke would affect your baby that much, if at all.

You have to drink way more caffeine to have it pass to your milk. My son sleeps the same way. It's normal.

My DS is also this age and never naps for much longer than 30 min either and I don't drink any caffeine. Enjoy your diet coke :)

Only about 1 percent of the caffeine up take in gets passed through your milk, so you're totally fine with one soda a day. It's probably just an issue of not being the best nap taker. I'm sure it'll work itself out.

Something else to consider - caffeine levels typically peak in your milk supply about an hour after consumption.  So if you're really worried about it (I wouldn't since you're drinking so little), drink it right after you nurse.

Do you swaddle your DD for naps?  My DS doesn't nap long unless he's swaddled!

I drink black coffee in the am (strong) and do not notice any difference in her sleeping habits, Im sure 1 diet coke wouldnt make that much of a difference either way. GL
